Ok, so I've always heard that it is good to start applying early for jobs with the majors, because it shows that you are interested and your progression can be seen each time you update.

However, lately some guys have written that if you apply without meeting the mins it makes you look like an idiot that can't follow basic directions.

I'm a brand new CA and would really hate to leave my current rj position until I get the bare minimum 1000 hours pic. But at the same time I'd hate to be on the backside of the hiring wave. My goal has always been to get to a major airline and fly overseas and see the world.

So just wondering what the general thought is on applying early without meeting the reqs.

perhaps you should talk to your airline's recruiters to see what they think, to get an informed opinion.

as for me, if you apply, worst they can do is say no. if you don't apply, there's zero chance they'll say yes.

A sponser of mine at a major had me apply before I met the mins, in fact he highly suggested that I get an application in as soon as I started considering the position, even though I'm still short on PIC time.

There's no harm in applying now, but you probably won't even be looked at until you meet the mins. Your buddies probably won't get anywhere walking your stuff in unless you meet the mins as well.

As for the 1000 PIC, if the right company comes calling, do what's right for you. Just remember - it's a lot easier to chill out and get the PIC now than it is to try and get it later (i.e. if you are furloughed). It's a lot better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.....

FWIW, when I walk a rec letter in to the CPO, they generally have a 3 month wait for an interview if they get the thumbs-up.
