Ok=
I know already posted something similar already, but i am getting ready to begin on my paper. First a few things...

What is AOPA's actual mission?
Does anyone know how they get revenue?
What type of items do they lobby in front of governments?

Thank you so much. BTW, I don't have a membership to them, and I cannot get one at this point.

Thank you!

Why not go to the AOPA site and do your research. I am sure the information you are looking for is in the public sections.

1. Promote and support General Aviation

2. Membership dues, merchandising, donations

3. They lobby againist airport closures, support GA aircraft manufacturers, lobby againist FAA NPRMs that would restrict or unfairly curtail GA aviation. AOPA was a supporter of the Hoover Bill. They also played a large role in reopening airspace to 91 after Sep 11

In addition, AOPA has an arm known as the Air Safety Foundation, which has a mission which is self-evident. This part of AOPA is a 501 C (3) charitable foundation, unlike the main body of the organization which is not tax deductible because of the lobbying activities.

AOPA is the only organization of its kind, and can be characterized as a 'pilot's best friend'.

Join today- without AOPA our flying privs would be curtailed- and they do not just jump up and down and scream about everything the faa does- many times they are on the same side such as an ongoing effort to keep local and state governments from passing legislation concerning aviation- such as background checks for pilots etc - that is the jurisdiction of the feds. Go to the aopa website. If you join you get a nice monthly magazine also. We need to talk to AOPA and the NRA into a combined membership at a discount.

I joined today...the airport diagramns will be extremely useful...

especially the information on the FBOs of each airport...

Anyone know if the Approach plates and weather info are official and usable for actual flying?

Surely, your browser can get you there. The web site explains everything including the huge $39/yr membership cost.

Been a member for 25 years - for all they do and all you get including the magazine, I can't think of any money better spent. Without AOPA, I doubt you would be able to fly from the Northeast to Florida without dodging huge amounts of Military airspace, we'd still have 25 mile TFR's around just about any suspected terrorist target, you probably couldn't get or afford a medical, our FAR's would only allow training flights every other Sunday in clear weather (hyperbole here) and there'd only be one GA airport left open in New Jersey.

Pilot counselling

One other, important function of AOPA is to provide counselling services to pilots. In particular, informed and confidential medical and aviation legal advice. I reinstated my medical a year ago after not having one for eight years. I had questions and AOPA gave me answers. The counselors cannot provide legal advice - only a lawyer can do that - but they can give general answers and refer you to aviation attorneys.

These two services are definitely worth the price of your (tax-deductable) membership.

Archer, the charts and diagrams that AOPA provides are not officially usable for navigation. Only government or Jepp IFR charts may be used for navigation.
