Union solidarity issues get some folks around here pretty heated up. Well, being a GA flyer, one thing that heats me up is pilots not sticking together and being an AOPA member.
It costs $39/yr. About a half-hours rent for the average light GA plane. The benefits are pretty good, but the most important thing is the one strong voice in Congress and with other legislative groups.
Don't be a parasite on the system. Put something back in to protect it for us all. The people in authority around this country pretty much all respond the same to the citizens they direct. If they can divide and separate - it's much easier for them to push their agenda through. If we are united in opposing them, we'll stand a much better chance of protecting our rights from the continuous onslaught of rules and restrictions.
Stick together. Join AOPA.
