Since there are a lot of travellers here, I was wondering if anyone has been to El Salvador in the the last few years?

If so, how is the safety for Americans travelling throughout the country, including rural areas. We would be with a local guide.

The state department travel advisory is absolutely horrific, but the guide says no problems.

I have been there a lot. Just a typical Latin American city.Be careful in the country due to mines etc. that are still there since the war. You are safer there then downtown Miami. Just don't go anywhere alone.

No problems at all. I travelled around the country using public transport, alone with no guide. I ate in markets and stayed in cheap local hotels. Very friendly people in rural areas. San Salvador is a dump and is not typical of the rest of the country.
