I know they've been down for awhile, Any word on them firing the hiring back up?

Next month we will probably be back up to 60/month...latest bid just closed and there are 480 vacancies that need to be filled...

And that is without all the early retirements we will probably have because of the passing of the pension reform bill....

Any idea of how many are in the folders where applicants are drawn from? Last I heard there were only about 125-150 or so.... I was recently moved to the 'get called' folders and curious about how many are there in order to maybe guage a possible phone call :-)

I'd check your messages often as hiring is about to spool up. I casually had the chance to speak with the manager of hiring at the training center last week. They were interviewing pilots but I think these were all OBAP guys from the convention. He said that they were about to get real busy and that October would be the start of some big classes again with no current end in sight. 2007 should be a big hiring year over here.

Cool deal! Yea, I just tripple checked my phone number in the application to make sure I had the right one in there.

I suspect it may be fairly soon.......my sponsor told me I was in an upper folder ( not completly sure what than means) and that I just play the waiting game now. All of you are TONS of help posting on here!! This airline is really the place to be!

If the release of the system bid is any indication, they may be trying to speed things up. Usually the results of the bid don't come out for several days. This time it was released the same day. Very unusual.

And this, Larry Kellner's weekly message

"This week we also announced that we were going to convert 12 existing firm orders for Boeing 737 aircraft into orders for 12 new Boeing 737-900ERs. This makes us the first U.S. carrier to order these extended-range twinjets. They fly about 500 nautical miles farther than our existing 737-900s. The aircraft are expected to be delivered in 2008, and they’re going to have among the lowest operating costs in our fleet. That will allow us to serve high-demand markets more efficiently. We still have the same number of new Boeing 737 aircraft on order – we have firm commitments for 65 737s. We also have the option to convert more of our existing orders to the 737-900ER. The 737-900ER is a great aircraft for us, and is part of our continued focus on fleet modernization, fuel efficiency and delivering the best product in the business."

. They fly about 500 nautical miles farther than our existing 737-900s

500 extra miles wedged in the center seat on a 737.

Yeah the ride on a 75 is so superior. Better yet center row on a DC-10-10. Guess I'm off. I'd rather have those seats captained by JB 2nd year folks at 65/hour or better yet 'barbie jet' kids sponsered by US Air at '59'.

What a pathetic arguement...

Sweet, now if I could just qualify for OBAP membership!!! What a crock of sh!t...

You do qualify for OBAP.

Ironically, the only reason I "qualify" for OBAP membership is because they can't discriminate based on race... That being said, I'd like to see how many guys get interviewed from the OBAP convention with a "W" checked on their application...;)

Any calls going out to those without sponsors?

I think internal help is the only way to get called right now, not totally sure though. If my memory serves me right, all the prior posts from CAL pilots and new hires all wrote of the need for a sponsor.....however ,I reserve the right to be wrong ;-)

I agree you would have some explaining to do! Hang in there, the flood gates are getting ready to open.

You should have went my friend all kinds of folks were there white, black, and asian. as a matter of continental had one of the HR guys there check applicants' qualifications. yessir come october they do plan on hiring 60 a month. too bad you get no health coverage the first 6 months.

"Flood gates" is an analogy refering to the fact that hiring is going to pick up full steam very soon. Lots of people will be interviewing as opposed to only a few interviewing now. I am not sure what you were thinking, but I wanted to clear it up for you.

not entirely true. There is a bridge insurance offered at vcarious rates depending on coverage it vaires from $100 to $350 per month..you can enroll on your first day of class.......

also as mentioned earlier 486 vacancies on the lateswt bid that has an effected dat of 06/01/07 this is not counting the early retirements of which there is rumored to be upto 350.

good luck.

There are also plenty of insurance companies that specialize in short-term policies for just this sort of situation. When I went to CAL, I bought a $2500 deductible policy for around $70/month.

I guess you really are smarter than me. Gosh thanks for trying to point that out. Maybe you can understand that conversation?

From what I've seen...you don't really need the membership to get an interview. I see more "W" pilots interviewing and getting hired than anyone else.

That is why OBAP exists, anyone can join OBAP, you just have to support the goals. Being a member of OBAP isn't about getting into job fairs!! It's an opportunity to give something to our future. A big part of OBAP is going to schools mentoring kids, taking a group of kids up in an airplane to let them experience flight!! Something a lot of folks on this board take for granted!!! The career fair is an opportunity for members to meet airline reps and get a shot at an interview. The majority of OBAP members don't have fathers, uncles or neighbors to get them in!!

Let's face it until the late 70's not many airlines had people of color or female pilots. There are still a few today that don't have many, I think Frontier is one of those that does not hire many minority pilots, think I've only seen 1 or 2 black pilots and 4 or 5 hispanic, pretty bad considering they have over 600 pilots. Just goes to show how nepotism can effect an airline. And this is in no way picking on the pilots of Frontier, I've been on them a lot, very friendly group!!

The OBAP job fair was started in part I believe to offset nepotism, to give those on the outside a chance at getting a fair shot at an interview!! I've heard the Frontier Silver bullet is a must. If you don't know someone on the inside to give you a silver bullet, one could never get in!!

The same goes for women in aviation, same concept, to promote more participation from women. I've heard there are more men at wia than women!

Just my humble opinion!!!

All I want with my family on board is the most qualified pilots flying. So with these types of job fairs it makes it possible that the best might not get hired.

Could it be the most qualified person is a minority, or is it that only a certain class of people are, "the most qualified"

Could you please explain how an employer may hire less than qualified people from a job fair?? Is there still an interview process? Is there still a sim check?? Are they lowering the standards in any way??

What about all those folks who were able to get their sons hired? Where all those young kids the most qualified??

I would like it if someone at CA would just actually look at the res's on airline apps.com and call me because I meet the qualifications. I don't know a single person that works there but would still like the opportunity to compete for the job.
