Why do they even bother with that airline app's BS. You can't get them to look at your info unless someone walks it in. Or that's what I hear. It is no small task to fill that thing out.

true but preety soon they not being gonna be able to be so picky theyre already hurting for pilots and soon in the next 2-3 years they're really gonna feel it

Dude, someone's bitter! Everyone goes through the same process...with that attitude, why would they want to hire you?

What do you mean the same process. I've read here that if you dont have someone to walk a res in they are not going to call you. As for being bitter, not at all. Just want a chance. Thanks though for the attempt at the psychic reading.

first point of advice: do not believe everything you read on the internet.

second point of advice: do not defeat yourself and your effort to join a major airline. make your own case, seek all avenues of contact, and stay motivated and updated.

CAL hires from all areas of aviation. military, charter, 135, regionals -jet & turboprop, etc. they don't just hire interns - trust me on that one.

most importantly you must maintain a good attitude. you never know who will be watching - it might be someone willing to help further your career.

Thanks palomino. I am in a very good position. I'm not furloughed or unemployed and at the top seniority at my operator. I have the time to move on and not worried about loosing the job I have. Maybe a little misunderstood. No bitterness or attitude. Just staying motivated and updated on a way to get my res to the right people. I just dont know anyone there personally. Thanks.

I'm a recent CAL hire. No walk-in, no connections....don't believe everything you read on the forums.

Scarabus - I apologize if I offended you. I personally don't think someone walking in your resume is BS at all, that shows someone who works for CAL vouches for your flying and your quality of character. Why is that a bad thing if a high quality company like CAL wants to select people that are a known caliber of aviator? I think most folks would agree if they hypothetically ran a multimillion dollar company and they had to hire new pilots they would do the same. As far as filling out the airline app's application, I didn't think it was that painful...pretty standard for a corporate application, taking about an hour or two to fill out. Again, sorry for any offense created...

Try about one to two weeks. Unless you file your life into a neat and tidy file folder that says: DORK

Don't have a DORK folder, however I do have all my past addresses, important papers, etc. in a folder that does say GEEK. Does that work as well?

The online application takes :45 or less. It is part of the interview process. Your ability to read and follow directions is important. So if you want to work at Continental take time to fill it out, and additional seek out any Continental co-workers in your travels and speak with them about Continental. It certainly is important to Continental to have folks referring individuals they know and can refer. Internal referrals are asked to take responisbility for their referral for 1 year. Helping you get through training, adjusted in base, questions etc.. so they take it serious. They interview on your referral, and then compare it to applicants on file. The hiring process at Continental is fantastic. If you can load an FMS and preapre a a flight for departure in :20 then an online application is easy. Good Luck--- this is a great place to be!

Hi!

I've spent about 10-15 hours on the application process, and still have a ways to go.

Scarabus,
To piggyback a little--I got hired at AA when "knowing Cecil" was a must. Unfortunately, I didn't know Cecil. However, I did go to one of Kit Darby's fun fests and met with the receptionist for Pilot Recruitment (I didn't know it at the time). Yes, I was dressed in the "interview suit," had my resume and was aware that it was "showtime." Needless to say, I got an informal interview with the CA who ran pilot recruitment at the time and then the real interview a few months later.

You can get hired without knowing people on the inside, you just have to look for the opportunities and not screw it up. Good luck! I'm sure it will happen for you sooner or later!:)

Lame!! YGBSM!

Scrapdog and FLY CONTINENTAL, if a pilot has never applied at an airline before it can be quite a major task. I have spent MANY hours compiling residence history, adding up flight times, contacting references, etc. In addition to the app, I have even more hours spent networking and reading up. And finally, lets not forget the time I have put in compiling my own background check. I have been doing nothing short of living and breathing this potential job for the last three months.

I don't know if this means I am disorganized, over-involved, or unable to follow instructions - but I do know my app is where I want it to be now. If I am fortunate enough to get an interview (much less get hired), I will feel like I have accomplished a monumental task.

Just my 2 cents...

if you look at aviationinterviews.com the flight times really varies....

Same here. I didn't have any pull on the inside from Delta, but I went to an Air Inc weekend, went up to the Delta booth and met the legend himself (what was his name? his son is there now, Bluto or Pluto or something), made my case, and told him when I was available. He wrote down the month and his initials on my resume. They called me in that month for an interview. I tubed the interview, but found out your network can be a network of one person, one meeting, to get the interview.

You're thinking of Plato.

That's it. Plato Ryan I think it was. Rolls right off the tongue. Didn't he retire to allow his son to be hired at 21 or 22 years old, which would, some 38 years later, make him the #1 pilot in seniority at Delta. I saw the younger walk by when I was there and people whispered as if to say, hey, there goes the future king. Indeed he will be.

Is it a bad idea to include scabs on Con. refrence list? Or has that whole thing blown over through the years.

Man, that's a good question. Finally, someone with a ligit concern.

I had the same thought when I originally posted my app online. I called on two people that I know who both worked for CAL. One a good ALPA backer, the other an ex-EAL scab (I didn't do my research beforehand). When all was said and done, the scab never offered any insight or offer any help to "walk-in" to the CP. The ALPA guy, who hasn't seen or spoken to me in years, went out of his way to do a one-on-one sit down with the CP.

Needless to say, I haven't been in contact with the scab since then looking for his help. I think what took him back was listed on my app, Professional Affiliations "ALPA".

Oh well...........

Kudo's to my real help. I owe him a steak dinner....make that a steak-house...
