Any hired-interns out there?

Just wondering if there are any interns out there that have been brought on after the internship was over recently. Also, any guys at Chicago Express or ATA that could give me the gouge on life as an intern at either of these places?

Where did you intern at and how was the internship overall? Where were you based at, I was hoping for some of the interns to give a little info on how things went, what school they were affiliated with, etc...

US Airways Intern

I was an intern at US Airways (mainline) a few years ago. I could probably get on now as a customer service rep. At the time of my internship they were in the process of merging with United. Obviously that did not happen and unfortunately they have many pilots out on the street.
My deal was to be guarenteed an interview with any of the wholly owned Airways carriers when I met time requirements.
I am currently working for one of Airways code share carriers.
It may have been a consideration, but I dont think the internship being on my resume got me here.

I know quite a few people who interned at some of the other regional carriers (ACA, ASA) and did bridge programs who did get jobs soon after graduation though.

I went to Riddle and interned with ACA. The internship was awesome. Unlike a lot of other programs where you only work in one department, ACA ships you around every two weeks or so, which means you finish up with a great overall understanding of how the company runs. The people at ACA are first rate too. All of them where extremely nice, and wanted to go out of their way to help you any way they could. Minimum times for interns to interview are 600 total and 100 multi. Not sure what the current state of the program is considering ACA has guys on the street right now, but if things improve I'm sure it'd be one of the top 2 or 3 internships out there.

FlyChicaga, could you tell me who was your intern supervisor (name, position). I was wondering if you had access to the ground schools and sims, what department(s) you worked in and what your basic job duties consisted of. Also, were you based in indy? I am interested in the chicago express internship because my school has placed a few people there with rather low times on a bridge-type program.

I know the riddle rats have been doing the ACA internship, but have any of the guys actually been brought into flight ops after the internship or is it just an excuse for 4 months of free labor?

If your gonna intern do it with a major. Unless there are none of those available. Then, settle for a regional.

FedEx and UPS both have internships. All the pax majors did at one point but I am not sure which are still running. I don't believe UAL, DAL, CAL or AMR are currently doing internships.

I did an internship at AA in the summer of 96' at their training academy in DFW. Although a great experience and a good time, it hasn't and probably never will land me a job there the way things are going. Do an internship with a regional. It will probably prove more beneficial to you right now.

yeah intern with a major just out of college because in 10-12 years after you have done the regional thing, they'll remember you. along with the 5000 other interns, 15000 regional captains, 5000 military cronies, and 2500 buddies kids who are interviewing too.

I interned with X-Jet two years ago. It was a great experience, and at the time they were getting 2 to 3 ERJ's a month and had classes running frequently. I was able to sit in Indoc, CRM, and Mexico ops. Then a few weeks after that i got to participate in ERJ systems class. I worked for the Chief Pilots in EWR and had to do some paperwork, but there was plenty of time to jumpseat and enjoy my summer. Talking to other people that have done internships with other companies, i think that X-Jet has a great internship program.

treetopflyer: I guess because you didn't intern you don't understand what a great "in" it can be.

The bottom line is when things turn around - you will need as many things going in your favor to get on with a major. Compeition will be very fierce, you are right. That is why having a internship will give you a unique leg up that not many others will have.

People like you are short sighted. It is still a lot easier to get on at a regional then with a major (and will be even when the majors start hiring again). If your going to invest 4 months of your life, at least have the chance of a good return. A career at Chicago Express, in my opinion, is not a good return... unless you are too old to catch the next wave of hiring.

In my opinion, hours don't mean nearly as much at the major level that they do at the regional level. Once you have your turbine PIC it really doesn't matter. The majors don't really care if you have 1000 turbine PIC or 5000 turbine PIC.

I know several "riddle rats" that landed a job as an FO at ACA with 600 hours TT.

Most of them are lucky and still have a job.

I did the ACA Internship, and my view of it is about 180 degrees opposite of the previous posted one.

On the other hand, I did one internship with a major (no longer in business) and that was the best 4 months of my life. Talk about a blast. Sat in on 767 ground school, got 15 hours of sim time, plus unlimited international travel!!

To bad they're out of business now.......still had a lot of fun though.
