I am looking to get my gyrocopter rating and am looking for a good CFI with gyro in NJ/PA/NY area. Anyone know of one?

Anyone in the DFW area who offers this training?

Besides blowing a wad of cash any GOOD resason why you would want to?

Just bought a 900' grass field. The cheapest aircraft that will work there is a 2 seat gyro copter 160hp with an enclosed cabin isabout $25k. A old, worn out 180hp Supercub ($50k) or a nice one (about $75k-??). Not sure what whirlwinds reason is...

Check out The Popular Rotorcraft Association at www.pra.org. It's your best bet for info on gyros.

I logged about 2 hours of instruction in 1989 in a 2-seat Parsons trainer (N54WP, the same aircraft now hanging at the American Helicopter Museum in West Chester, PA). It was a blast and pretty easy to fly, but I decided not to pursue it because of the hassle and expense of adding a gyro rating to my private fixed wing. With the certification of the Groen Brothers gyro (www.groenbros.com), who knows, maybe the gyro rating might be more useful in the future.

As far as your field length, gyros are great short-field LANDING machines (a fuselage length will do it), but the takeoff roll can be long until you master the rotor acceleration technique. Pre-rotators help, but jump-takeoff systems are still fairly rare on recreational gyros.

Good Luck!

yes congrats on the purchase.
You know the one thing about land is? They aren't making any more of it. so enjoy all you can

Thanks folks. Can't wait to get an aircraft I can fly out of it.

Oh...I misread and thought this was a thread about gynecologist pilots. Thought there might be a good joke in there.

Never mind.

My reason is largely out of curiousity more than anything else.

That, and it would be fun to have another rating on my ticket. I've got my CFI in the helicopter and I'm a few weeks away from having my CFI in the airplane. Why not in the gyrocopter too? :)

10 year old info.

I knew a pilot in Mobile, Al. that said he bought his from a dealer in Paducah, Ky. His name is Bill Wiggins and he was a CFI. I don't know his status at this time.

Thanks for the link...

You're in luck, head over to Caddo Mills and check out Air Command. Just talked to a guy here in Houston today flying one, got his rating there. Said 15 hrs dual oughta do it...

Wonders if there is anyone in FL that offers it, it looks like fun when they are flying. Last time I was at Flagler (X47) there was a guy going up and down the runway, so I guess it's time for a short flight to Daytona.
