I was asked by a business owner if I was interested in doing his annual on his 6. I am a corporate pilot and have some free time once in a while. So I talked to a couple of associates that work at some GA shops and they said it flat rates at 24 hours. so I told him for $800 I would do it. It is a clean AC. He about fell off his chair. He takes it to a shop and they will do it for $350. Am I way off or is he getting a really good deal.

Thanks for any input.

Three fifty is a pencil whip annual. Let him go do it, but don't put yourself at risk by flying it afterward.

Eight hundred is fair. So long as he knows that's just an inspection with no work. Work is extra.

I pay $200 for the inspection of my 150 and any discrepancies are fixed at an extra cost from a mechanic of my choice usually the guy doing the annual if he has time. My 150 averages about $500 to $1000 a year for it's annual.

Just went out the other day someone again swiped my solar float charger battery was weak so took home placed on charger tested cells 4 out of 6 dead.... tested fine at annual in January! $150.00 for a battery oh well!! now when I am gone for 2 months I will take it out and stick it in the shop.

How old was your battery (calendar time)? January was five months ago, a lot of things happen in five months.

Just another IA pencil whipping annuals.

Doesn't speak highly of the people who use them, either.

thanks

After some reviewing my conversation with him, I do believe you guys or gals are correct. He just wanted me to sign off the annual and tell him how nice his ac is. When I told him 850 plus parts and material for an oil change ,he said it was just changed. I said ok than just a filter to cut the old one open and inspect it. he looked at me like I had 3 eyes.

I'd say, can't even scratch the surface of FAR 43 App D for 200 bucks. Maybe the IA is independently wealthy?

Yea, I assist takes a 12-15 hour job makes it 6 to 8 and the $200.00 is just the 6 to 8 hour inspection only... Any repairs are billed at $25.00 an hour $35.00 if he gives instruction and supervision.

He used to be a FAA Inspector and DAR before he retired

$800+ for the inspection of a Cherokee SIX is not that bad my IA said assisted would be $700+

For one thing, unlike a 100 hour inspection, an annual inspection may not be delegated. 6-8 hours is insufficient for an annual inspection. The paperwork and logbook search takes that long or longer. A full AD search, 337 search, and examination of the logbooks is necessary and required.

No, when you're paying two hundred for an annual, whether you pick up a screwdriver to open panels or not, whether you put a bucket under the sump and drain oil or not, whether you clean spark plugs or not, it's a cut rate, improper, pencil whipped annual. Two hundred bucks is absolutely insufficient for a proper inspection.

One who seeks out such chop rate priced work is just as guilty as the person doing it, and it speaks just as poorly for the customer as it does for the IA performin the work. Moreover, it's an embarassment to the industry.

For you, NW pilot, it's exactly what most of us would expect.
