Record loads, profits.... fuzzy math? I guess the company has to keep up with attrition as long as they refuse to recall pilots!

CHICAGO, July 19 (Reuters) - American Airlines plans to cut its mainline capacity -- the number of seats for sale -- by 1 percent in 2006 and by 2 percent in the third quarter, the carrier's chief financial officer said on Wednesday.

The No. 1 U.S. airline, a unit of AMR Corp (AMR.N: Quote, Profile, Research), will cut capacity by 3 percent on domestic routes in 2006 and by 5 percent on domestic routes in the third quarter, Thomas Horton said on a conference call with analysts. He said American plans to add capacity on international routes.

Doesn't that just mean they transfer the newly wingletted (sp?) 757s from domestic to international destinations?

It makes perfect sense. They cut back last year and it's now showing up in the bottom line. Keep on cutting and the profit will skyrocket! TC

Bob Crandall, eat your heart out! (Shrinking to profitability... hey, it really works.)

Labbats, you may have a point there... they could very well transfer some domestic to Int'l and keep the overall capacity the same. But guess where and who flies the new domestic that opens up..... Bump!

I wouldn't worry too much... Most airlines cut seats in the third quarter, typically the worse quarter for business. I know we'll be flying much less in September and October.

At the present time, it'll be a net gain. TC

What is so wierd about all this ( I am in 135), september and october are some of our busiest months. I am just saying. Anyway fly safe everyone! ( is there any other way to fly?).
