Could be AMR management is trying to deflect attention away from the unions' desires for a merger with US.

Sad. In the end a handful of people will walk away with a gazillion dollars and a thousands of employees will be left trying to figure out a way to put their kids through school while keeping up with their 300 dollar a month ambien addiction along with that pricey Ashley Madison subscription.

F9, I highly doubt it. What do we have to offer? Some leases on Airbuses? A hub in which there is plenty of competition and very expensive? A screwed up Integrated Seniority List? Nope, not gonna be F9. We re on our own.

Maybe F9+US would be a match made in heaven, sounds like a lot of the same problems ;)

This situation will be what forces a final round of mergers in the industry. I predict an AMR/USAirways combination to make a new, "largest" carrier and then the remaining big carriers will go after the remaining smaller independent airlines or the smaller carriers will combine to make a new, big carrier. Economy of scale is important, if you look back through airline history smaller airlines (and large ones too sometimes) tend to either fail or get bought out eventually. Alaska, SW and Hawaiian are the exceptions to the rule so far. The jury is still out on JB, FRNT, Spirit, VA, Allegiant, etc. This is sure to get interesting before it's over.

AA + US Air = 3 Pilot Groups more fun and games

If AA joins/bought/swallowed by US Air then you would probably end up with a pilot group in a 3 way p***ing contest –
East V West V AAA, what fun that would make. The treads on that one alone would swamp the website.
