What's this "unit" they talk about in their website regarding the pay? Is it $50/unit? 100? 3?

Seriously, just considering applying, since i need to build a bit more time..

Just think of it as an hour of pay. It varies with equipment and seniority, and 40 units per week is base compensation for a line.
 
Also, figure your "unit" into overtime. Your normal route will give you 40 units per week. Special Flights are considered overtime, and they pay you time and a half "unit pay" per flight hour.
 
First year Chieftain pay is about $1975 a month before Uncle Sam bends you over and has his way with you. Live on the WA side and at least you won't have to pay state income tax.

Also, don't count on getting any specials in PDX. They are pretty much non-existant there. I was based there for six months and only heard of one revenue special during that time.

Or if I remember right you can take straight duty time if it's more. Ex: you fly a special, block 2.0 and are on duty for 5 hours. 1.5 x 2 = 3 units, so you would get paid 5 extra units because the duty time was more than 3. Also, I believe the monthly pay they use in the pay matrix is based on more than 40 units a week, so if you fly at a base where you don't get many specials (PDX) you may actually make slightly less than their example. Definately look into Vancouver, WA if you're based at PDX. Cheaper, you can pump your own gas, and if you live on the east side traffic on 205 is much better than the 5, at least it was when I was there.
 
The monthly pay that they show on the pay matrix includes all 52 weeks and just divides them by 4. Some months only have 2 pay periods and some have 3 cause the 4 and 5 week months that we have.
 
How hard is to get the piston based in BFI? I know their B99 and metro lines are pretty senior, but how about piston stuff? I was thinking I can drive down to PDX every week and fly out of there since they are hurting for pilots down there, but if I can get BFI then i will be a happy camper..

Good luck. I think the Chieftan drivers out of BFI have been there for 1-2 years. That is a long time in the PA31 these days. PDX has lots of runs to change/move up through. Not a quick upgrade place. Most of the 99's are outstationed and those pilots rarely leave. Just another two cents.
 
a PDX outstation 227 run was available out of Richland, WA... I can't beleive no one jumped on it!

piston in BFI is a timing thing. Right now, we are so fat on pilots it's crazy. We had 6 reserves sitting around yesterday. OUCH. But like we all know, things change...quick.

I know there is a lot of "potential business" in the works, and if it goes through we could be VERY short. So, basically.... never know. Get hired, put your standing bid in, and hope for the best.

I have heard it is nearly impossible to get a BFI spot unless you are with AMF for life. PDX is also not hurting for PA31 pilots right now, there is actually a glut, but that is this week. Horizon is pealing off the Cheiftan Pilots left and right. Right now Oakland BUR and DAL are needing PA31 pilots. However by the time you interview, train, and are ready for assignment it will be a whole new story. You can speculate where you want to go. But they will send you where you are needed.
