I've been seeing a lot of commercial jets with landing lights that alternate between the and right sides. I've seen some corporate jets like this as well.

Anyone know if this is a factory thing or aftermarket? Seems like a good idea for collision prevention.

It's an aftermarket box that will flash the lights back and forth. Far as I know, SWA is the only airline to use them.

It's funny to see one of SWA's Shamu painted 737s with all the lights flashing from side to side. It reminds me of a Crown Victoria black and white responding Code 3!

We have them on our Falcons... They are called Pulse Lights and come standard from the manufacture. We use the pulse continuously below FL180. At night, we go from pulse to steady at about 200 AGL for landing.

I haven't heard of the TCAS Activated lights, but sounds like a great idea!

I've always wondered: Do the automatically go from pulse to steady at 200' AGL or is that a manual function?

I like the idea that when the TCAS goes off, the go on!

Some of Air Wisconsin's old 328s also had flashing recog lights as mentioned above. FWIW, I'm sure there are other airlines/ aircraft that have them as well.

I've even seen them on a light single...I think it was a P210 but it was a while ago.

I've seen them on 152s and 172s as well... I didn't realize there was an option to switch them to steady beams-- always made me wonder you'd want a flashing light when it's your only landing light. Learn something new every day i guess.

The T-37 taxi light (in the nose, right next to the landing light) flashes whenever the landing gear is down and locked...Gives the folks in the runway supervisory unit at the edge of the runway a chance to do a gear check on the hyperventilating solo students before they bent metal.
