Just wondering if either of these companies give any preference to an app submitted with a local address? Not sure if either are hiring yet thought I'd give it a shot. Thanks in advance

We (Hawaiian) aren't hiring yet, and haven't since mid-2001. We still have about 50 on furlough, with no clear picture on when they'll come back.

In the past it was much easier to get hired if you were local, because you had to have recommendations from HA pilots to get an interview. That will probably still be the case when we do resume hiring again in a year or two, but as for the details I don't have a clue. Once you have reached the interview though, by far the most important factor is your attitude and personality. HA is a special place, and I think we will be looking for the right people to share a cockpit with on 5 to 10 hour legs as a very big part of the hiring process.

I know Aloha had been hiring recently, but I don't know if they still are or not.

HAL... what's the story with upgrades at Hawaiian? Had a jumpseater not long ago that said he was hired in '92 (been furloughed 3 years or so) and can't hold captain in either 717 or 767.

The bottom guy to get Captain on the last bid was hired in April '92. That takes us to essentially the same point we were in early '03 before they started furloughing and moving people backwards. I don't think anyone below him actually has made it to Captain yet. There's less than a dozen other '92 hires below him, then the next batch is the '98 hires. I was a '99 hire, and if the airline doesn't grow any more, I'm still looking at 7 more years or so before upgrade, which is about 12 years of flying (and 3 of furlough) before upgrade. Any new planes or growth will speed that up however. That 12 year span is right on average though for most people here. A few got lucky and may do it faster, but others may actually take longer. It just depends on when you were hired.

I would imagine you have a bunch of guys getting ready to retire with junior captain having a DOH of 1992.

Not really. It has more to do with a large expansion in the '80's than anything else. There was a huge hiring boom then, and there are a lot of still 'young' Captains flying here that won't retire for another 10 - 20 years. Our retirement is pretty steady at 15 - 20 per year for quite a while.

Yes, it sucks for the junior guys, but we knew all this before we got here. It's just part of the package, and it's still a good place to work. Being in the left seat isn't the 'be-all, end-all' of flying; enjoying the job is.

Hey I have a question for the Hawaii guys.

I graduated from Campbell High School (Ewa Beach) in so I'm fairly familiar with Oahu. I've been back a few times but haven't been to the outer islands since I was in HS. I'm looking to take the family out this summer and was thinking about 2 nights on Maui to see Haleakala and 2 nights on Hawaii to see Volcanoes National Park.

If you have any suggestions on places to stay on either island or things that are must sees and wouldn't mind sending me a pm or posting it here I would surely appreciate it.

Do you still have a military ID?

There are military cabins inside Volcanoes National Park that are perfect.

I stayed there in 2003 with my kids.

I don't believe there is anything similar in Maui.

Lax: Yes, retired. I called the KMC and took a look at their website. We can either get a 1 bdrm or a 3 bdrm cabin. It will be me, the wife and 2 kids, do you think we can fit in the one bdrm or should we splurge for the 3 bdrm? Are the cabins in pretty good shape? Was there enough stuff to do there (in the park) for 2 days? I'd like to see the rest of the big Isle as well, but might base out of there.

There's a place called Volcano house right there in the park. Not sure how pricey it is. There are a number of b&b's around the Hilo area-check on the net. They are hit and miss, we stayed in one near a waterfall was not impressed-too small and out of the way. Hilton Waikoloa is about a 2.5-3 hour drive. Good for kids lots of pools, slides etc. though meals are expensive.

I went with my wife and 3 kids in 2003 --- if there are no 2 bdrm cabins available then take the 3 bdrm.

The cabins are defintely not as nice as the Hale Koa Hotel on Oahu, but they are as good or better then the old cabins at Bellows, if you've ever stayed in those. I don't think you'll get a better value at any civilian hotel or B&B in that area.

Yes, there's plenty to do over 2 days at the park. They have a park center with info and a brief video on the volcano...plenty of hikes, lava tubes, the rim and the lava flows down near the water. Listen to the guides on what to wear down to the lava flows (ie. closed toed shoes), and go right before sunset and then stay until it gets completely dark to get optimum viewing on the oozing lava (...bring flashlights).

There's also a great black sand beach about 15-20 mins west of the park exit. Our kids were able to see a bunch of large turtles there with 2 coming right up on the beach.

In general the big island is very BIG --- 10 times bigger then Oahu. And, it does not have the H-1/H-2/H-3 style freeways like Oahu.

The drive from Hilo to the volcano isn't too bad, but the drive from Kona to the volcano definitly takes a few hours. If your 2 days include travel time to from the volcano park don't worry that you'll have too much time there.

It is true that we're going to 85 hour bids... BUT, we are WAY short, at least in the -700, plus the -200 crews are gonna have the same reserve as the -700 crews which is 16 days as opposed to 18 days. I think this will offset any furloughs. If they furlough people, it will be the same clusterf**k as before. Furlough for a month only to figure out they're even more ridiculously short of FO's to recall them back.

This 85 hour thing has NIGHTMARE written all over it. I see you HAL guys talking about OT and keeping minimum staffing levels. I think that is exactly what is going to befall us over here at AQ. Everyone that works an extra trip over the mandatory amount the company can assign puts people on the street...at least in my eyes...

How does it work over at HAL? Is there a mandatory amount they can assign or does it just go by however much guys want to fly? Anyone ever do any numbers as to how many people are kept on the street by the extra flying being picked up?

Max of 99 hours, with a minimum guarantee of 75 hours. Now, that being said, scheduling can call you on a day of and give you an open trip which you will be paid double time for (recently triple time). They recently posted a list of those accepting these trips, and it was amazingly long. I'm talking pages and pages. Hey, but who cares, ALPA, and most of the pilots certainly don't seem to.

Ouch....would it be safe to day that if 3 pilots worked the max 99 hours that they would in essence be putting one more guy on the street (or postponing a recall)? That is 72 hours of flight time....

I'm so worried about that $hit happening over here...

The time not flown by line holders will be assigned to the reserves, and then they will try to assign the left over open trips to those willing to fly. I don't care what any one says though, extra flying equals less active pilots. HAL has been understaffed for a long time now, and the pilot's have allowed it. It is now finally catching up to them. I hope the same thing doesn't happen at AQ.
