Sorry this is so late...didn't find this great site until last minute!!! I have an interview with jetBlue next Tues and I have been reading many of the glowing recommendations about your services.....Is there ANY chance I can get a telephone consult sometime between now and then? I would be most appreciative.......if not, with the late notice, I completely understand...thanks in advance either way!!

That depends......

What do you think about this 8 in 24 exemption Jet Blue is trying to get?

Anyone can already fly more than 8 hours in 24 hours. I think you mean more than 8 hours between rest periods.

How do you figure anyone can fly more than 8 in 24? If you are then you may want to be careful! If things go bad with the wx etc ok, but you can't be scheduled more than 8 in 24

Lemme see here. This is how a JetBlue pilot responds to request from a prospective fellow pilot who pleas for help -- by misquoting and slamming somebody else. I'm beside myself here with laughter, given all this recent raving about how superior the atmosphere is in the Blue Utopia. Everyone gets along with everyone, and nobody can understand why it isn't that way everywhere.

Nobody said, SKANK, that you can't fly more than 8 hours in 24 hours (at least not in THIS short thread.) USNFDX referred to the "8 in 24" rule by it's common name, that is, the "8 in 24" rule. Most of us in the industry know what USNFDX referred to when he said "8 in 24" and most of us know how to apply it. Until recently, we all viewed it as a limit that, while imperfect, at least offered SOME sort of protection from having to work even LONGER with LESS rest than the loosest interpretation of that rule will allow. (Recently, some Blue Utopians have asserted that it is too restrictive, and they should be allowed to work longer than that, but that discussion is on other threads.) I don't think USNFDX meant "more than 8 hours between rest periods," as you assert. In fact, I think USNFDX is quite capable of saying exactly what he means. Ergo, I think he meant to say exactly what he said, that is, "8 in 24."

So, there's this guy that's got an interview with JetBlue, and he's asked for some help. Ball's in your court.

PAST V1-

Sure you can legally fly more then 8 hours in any 24 hour period, at leats under FAR 121 you can.

§ 121.471 Flight time limitations and rest requirements: All flight crewmembers.

(a) No certificate holder conducting domestic operations may schedule any flight crewmember and no flight crewmember may accept an assignment for flight time in scheduled air transportation or in other commercial flying if that crewmember's total flight time in all commercial flying will exceed --

(1) 1,000 hours in any calendar year;

(2) 100 hours in any calendar month;

(3) 30 hours in any 7 consecutive days;

(4) 8 hours between required rest periods.

If you look at (4) above, you are limited to 8 hours between REST PERIODS, not in 24 hours.

Say you report at 0000Z, do 1 hour preflight, fly from 0100 until 0600, then go into rest. you have flown 5.0 hours. Your reduced rest is from 0600 until 1400, the legal minimum. Then you go back on duty do a 1 hour preflight from 1400 -1500, and fly for another 5 hours, from 1500 - 2000. Total flight time for the period from 0000 - 2000 = 10.0 hours. All perfectly legal. This scenario would assume that you started out with normal rest before your day began, and that you would get your compensatory rest as required when you completed the day.

Not much fun, but legal nonetheless.

If you PM Albie he will return your e-mail. He's very disciplined returning his e-mails. Best of luck with your interview, and don't worry, jetBlue interviewers won't ask you about your views on the 8-in-24 Rule.

Jax and others..

Thanks for the info and trying to help me out. I thought it was a little strange someone would ask me about 8 in 24...Being a F-16 pilot...I have to admit...I have NO idea what that is...yet......but I'm learning....so no, I have no opinion on it yet.......I got ahold of Albie and we're trying to work something out.....Thanks again all and I'll let ya know how it goes next week...

PS I may even have an opinion on 8-24 next time....but no promises!! :D

Atldc9--

Don't have the FAR's with me now but will look into it. If I go 3+45 to the left coast. layover 10+00 and 4+16 (8+01 Total flight time) I'll be removed from my outbound trip for a legality. Lot's of ways to work this. I'll let you know what I find out...

No need to look at your FARs... He posted it for you and it's pretty clear. 8 hours between rest periods is all it says..Not 8 in 24. After you get abused, just make sure you get your compensatory rest.

I forgot to mention that is the rule for DOMESTIC 121, supplemental and flag op's have totally different rules, so you may be right if you are operating under those rules. Sorry.
