They are planning a new hire class this fall. So says a CA that just returned from recurrent.
I'm teaching recurrent today, and the fleet captains are still maintaining that there will be no new hires this year. This is what they are telling the pilots during class when they come in and do their question and answer and update session. Again, this is the "official" version. What is the actual truth...I guess we will see.

One thing I do know, is that we have not been given any indication in the training dept to expect a new hire class at this time. Hopefully this will change.

Hiring??

Just heard the word from Cici...there will be a July bid...it will have new hires. Unless things change again (and they may) she's usually a pretty reliable source.

About time. Today @ 1748, we had 2 SEA and 0 LAX 737 reserve captains. We are definately overstaffed. NOT

Wtfo?

For the 3rd time in as many days I have heard that the company is pre cancelling 500 flights for lack of crews.
Can anyone explain to me how the company holding out hiring helps us make money? Everyone knows that we're short crews and now they have to cancel flights. No one I've talked to thinks we need to give concessions because they're not hiring. So what the heck are they doing upstairs?
The way I see it if we need pilots to cover the schedule then hire them. If we don't then don't. But this "strategy" they're using is only hurting the company. I don't get it.

Of course, we are the last to know, but this is the first time I have heard a number even approaching 500 flights. Randy T. mentioned a number, but it was nowhere near that. He said that there were 39 on active duty, and about 30 in the pool. I'm certain there will be hiring, but I also think it will be later this fall or the first of next year. This July bid (assuming there is one) will have an effective date of Jan 1, so if there ARE new hires on it, they will need to begin class maybe by Oct, considering the holidays.

Bill Ayers told the stockholders he still plans to grow the airline 6.5% next year. One more thing to consider. It is too late to do anything about the summer schedule. If we are short, we are short. Starting a new hire class tomorrow will do nothing to save the summer schedule. But they believe, (or so they keep repeating to every CQ class) that in the fall and winter, we will be about 60 fat, but that number accounts for returnees from active duty, which is looking less likely that it will happen. So, that number will most certainly go down. So, based the extention of duty of those already out, I think we will see classes late in the year.

Of course, if you ask any one of the managers or above, they will all repeat the standard company line of no hiring this year. I guess we will wait and see. My salary and benefits, etc..are also closely tied to the profitability and long term viability of the company. I sure hope whatever they have in mind "upstairs" is for the good of us all, and is not simply a p!ssing contest to see who blinks first. I've been through enough of those in the past 25 years, and when it gets into that kind of deal, no one "wins".

Av8instyle...next time you're in the building, stop by and say hi. I'm in the "bowling alley"...room 230 where the instructors live. We're on the same aircraft, so we may have run into each other. There are only two MD-80 MFISs in there....I'm the one with the initials GE. I think we both may have worked at ERA once upon a time.

e-mail from Bonnie

The most recent rumors I have heard about class dates are for summer '05. If
you have questions please let me know. I hope you are all keeping current and
building your hours. I will cross my fingers that my next email has exciting
information for you! Have a great summer!

27 emails...

I too received Bonnie's "not so optimistic email". I was one of 27 email addresses. So, I'm thinking there are 27 of us doing the backstroke.

I sure hope this July bid is for real. Summer '05 doesn't sound as good as this fall.

OK, I'll do it.
GE...dependable initials!

Not being on the inside, I have a question for you Alaska guys/gals. I am wondering why you are cancelling your own flights at the same time you are sending Horizon aircraft to Frontier( are they not your competetion?). Maybe I'm missing something, but this really makes no sense.

I don't think the Alaska "guys/gals" here on the board...i.e. the pilots, have any say over either of these items. The cancelled flights or the deal that the Air Group made with Frontier to provide Horizon to do Frontier Jet Express. They aren't the ones who cancelled "their own" flights, nor "sent" Horizon aircraft to Frontier. I don't think you'd need to be "on the inside" to figure at least THAT much out.

Perhaps a letter to Bill Ayers, CEO; P.O. Pox 68900; Seattle, WA 98188?

He might have an answer to your question.

I wonder if your airline consults YOU or YOUR pilot group when making these types of decisions??

I can not explain the cancelled flights you speak of. But the Frontier deal was pure money sense. Frontier, who was going to have another Regional partner, period, and yes Frontier does compete with several airlines and to a small scale Alaska, approached Horizon (not Alaska) and made Horizon a deal to gaurantee profitable use of 9 of Horizons RJs. So Frontier has a regional partner, horizon has 9 RJ's flying that get paid just to T/O and Horizon still maintains a consistant 98% or better flight completion rate system wide. In addition to all that the deal adds money to the Alaska Air Group. How can you go wrong here. If Alaska wanted Horizon to fly more RJ';s ( and they do not) I am sure more would arrive.

back on page one...

Any more news on the July bid details???

Rhino,

Not really, that I have heard. Although the talk of a fall class is getting a little louder. We even had one of the Fleet Captains in recurrent last week use the term..."slim chance" when asked about hiring for this year, when all along they had been maintaing that there was no chance of hiring this year. So, even they are acknowledging the reality of the situation. So, all I can say is stand by to stand by......;)

Rumor Mill Fodder

I heard another rumor yesterday but I'm confused because I thought for sure I'd see it confirmed here and yet no one has posted any "exciting news."

Basically, I heard from someone "in the know" that the pool has been drained and that all poolies have been notified of a September class date. This person also said that hiring will be ramped up and that the company is going to hire a hundred or two pilots and soon.

Now, either this was some elaborate rumor that this person made up for fun or else you poolies are holding out... Anyone get a phone call? My understanding was that all but one of the 36 floaters accepted the September class date and that 35 new hires will begin training this Fall.

There is no classes planned. Nobody in the pool has been notified of anything. That is fact as of 12:57 pm 6/21/04

There WILL be a bid before Aug 1st. That is the word from above as of yesterday afternoon. We were shown estimated training requirements on the MD as a possible result of this bid. These pilots will be trained over time, with the goal to have all on line by next June. As I understand it there will be two effective dates...Jan and March.

Whether this will require new hires is still unclear. Again, the training requirements we were given for the MD (roughly 3-4 crews per month beginning in Sept) are estimates, and no mention if these were pilots currently on the other aircraft, or if there will be new hires. I would imagine it would be a mixture. But, that is just my guess.

One thing for certain, is that between now and Aug 1, this plan will have changed several times. Nothing about it is carved in stone at this point...

PS...this just came across my email in the minutes from yesterday's Flight Ops staff meeting...

"The next position bid will be out in August and adding 30 new hires to offset the attrition due to retirements. 10 new hires are anticipated in 2004. (BJ) "

So, I guess that is the plan as of today, 6/23 at 12:30...
