From the Q3 conference call:

"Brandon S. Pedersen - Chief Financial Officer, Principal Accounting Officer, Vice President of Finance and Vice President of Finance-Alaska Airlines Inc

"Turning to capacity. We expect consolidated capacity to grow about 7% to 8% in 2013. The Alaska fleet will grow by a net of 7 aircraft over the next 15 months as we take delivery of 13 737-900ERs starting next month and retire 6 aircraft in the fourth quarter of 2013.

"An advantage we have, that the majority of our airplanes are owned versus leased, giving us a great deal of flexibility to adjust our fleet growth. An example of this flexibility is our recent decision to dispose of 3 additional 737-700 aircraft next year, bringing our planned retirements to the 6 aircraft I just mentioned compared to 3 originally planned."

I'm guessing that's why the number was revised down. Our hull growth will be 3 fewer through 2013. It will only be 7 instead of 10. If you include the few retirements plus growth and you get about 70. I'm guessing 70 will still be on the low side.

One more tidbit from the conference call:

"Andrew Harrison - Vice President of Planning & Revenue Management

"Okay. That's okay. I was probably referring to Hawaii growth and how that is going to become much slower. What I will tell you is, Helane, that I think given the aircraft deliveries, we're looking about 7% to 8% growth next year. In the next 3 weeks, we will be announcing 3 new markets for 2013 for the mainline business, and from where I sit today, that will be it for new market in 2013."

Is management playing coy or are they scaling back their San Diego Plans? Also, is a market a city or city-pair?

SLC tomarrow .. Well be at solid 8% growth next year not the 7-8 as stated in conference call.. I'm guessing DTW next week and a CLT ?? The week after ?!?!,

:rolleyes:Alaska only grows through attrition, which equates to no real growth. How is Flight Path working out for the employees?

All sources I have point to hiring of at least 120 next year(confirmed today). Hopefully you're wrong about only 70...

Mookie

The 737-700 reductions was announced awhile ago, well prior to the conference call.

I will try to see what I can find out but I think when looking at hiring, management looks at a range. 70 seems low when you consider we are taking quite a few deliveries early and the a/c retirements are happening in Q4 so we will still need the pilots. 120 seems high as I don't think our training department right now is capable of hiring that many when you consider that our staffing is based on the majority of the check airmen flying the line in the summer so all of this training needs to happen in the shoulder months. I bet the truth lies somewhere inbetween the two extremes, which is 95 which is pretty much spot-on what we hired this year.

SLC announced this morning. I'll throw my guesses in as ABQ for #2 since I think it's the largest city that we can turn, that we don't have service to, and CHS for #3 because of the Boeing growth there which I think might offset the lack of population.

Woohoo. I will send my stuff right in!

Alaska: "Thank you Mr. SoandSo, your resume is number 6321. We look forward to reviewing your items for our 120 positions, in which we really will hire only 80. If you have any greater piloting skills such as test pilot or check airman of the year award, please send us that information. We also recommend that you send in a letter of recommendation signed by each one of our pilots. Once hired we will provide you with a gift certificate to REI, in which you can buy an abundance of cold weather items, since you will be based in Anchorage for years. Thank you for your interest."

I really do like Alaska, I'll apply just to get the rejection letter. :bawling:

That is ludicrous. They'd never give us an REI certificate!

The rest. . .

Don't forget to get a prescription for plenty of Prozac, whether you are based in ANC or SEA;).

Alaska to trim pilot hiring from 120+ next year to about 70 .. Also SLC announcement ...

I got confirmation of this today from my source. It's based on the company's interpretation of the new rest rules. They somehow think its going to make us all "efficient" and will require less overall pilots.

Lets hope they're wrong...

Mookie.

How do the new work rules make us more efficient? Is each pilot going to be able to fly more hours per month? Someone who would know told me soft time is at 3%. I don't see how they're going to squeeze more flying out of the pilots.

Plus, won't they need more reserve zones, especially at night?

My source said the company's interpretation was it would reduce Newhires from 120 down to 70. Don't know how. The only pairing that won't work will be mex/gdl all nighter turns. Get ready for dfw and ord turns

Probably the same way we (QX) are going to be scheduled 8+hrs block and 13 hrs duty! But only six legs. So we have that going for us, which is nice.

I still don't get it. Each line pilot flies (approx) 80 hours a month now. Each pilot will fly 80 hours a month after the rules go into effect. That doesn't equal fewer pilots.

There's NO WAY Alaska could train 120 new hires a year anyway. When you treat your training program as an after thought, and basically refuse to fund it don't be shocked at seeing classes of 2 to 5 new hires/mo

much smaller Hawaiian pulled it off.... and unlike AK which has Boeing in their backyard.. HAL has to send them across 2500 miles of ocean!

HA size is a benefit because you only have to keep 600 (500 really since the first of the last 100 or so are only coming for recurrent now) current and not 1400. That takes up a lot of instructor/sim tim.

I think the main reason though is that the AS training profile (for better or worse) is a lot longer than HA's. I was surprised how much more training AS does in comparisson to HA. Longer indoc (1 week), longer systems (3 weeks), more sim sessions (1 week Fix Base and 2 weeks Motion), and then we have our "special qualifications" that aren't so "special" because almost everybody gets them all initally. SE Alaska (3-4 days through SE generally), Arctic (at least 1 usually 2 days), Overwater (1 day g/s), ETOPS (1 day ground school and 1 trip which is usually 2 or 3 days).

Maybe they have changed much of the above recently, but I have friends that were hired at HA and were sitting reserve 6 weeks later...that does not happen at AS...ever.

having just gone thru new hire with classes in both 717 and 767, I can tell you we do as much as this, almost exactly as much.

1 week indoc, 3 weeks ground school with VPT (fix base sim) training, Over Water 1 day, ETOPS for 767 guys 2 days, and two weeks motion sim in SEA... all told with days off and such, 7 weeks of training... then you have at least 1 month on waiting for/on IOE... so it's more like 2.5 months 0-hero..

They are also in the process of remodeling the entier HQ and school house building and that has been hard to deal with for both instructors and students.

It’s that time again, we are reopening the pilot application process the
morning of Monday, February 11th. We are excited to continue the hiring
process and need your help spreading the following helpful application tips:

 Only online applications are accepted via https://careers.alaskaair.com/Alaska-CareerOps.asp starting Monday, February 11th.

 The requisition will be open for 7 days; closing at 11:59pm on Monday, February 18th.

 All qualified candidates currently on the requisition posted in April 2012, will receive an email notifying them of the posting window and the need to reapply.

 All applicants who applied or were interviewed, but unsuccessful, last hiring window are eligible to reapply.

 The hiring team will review resumes once the requisition closes. We are looking for best qualified and don’t provide preference to those that applied first.

 The system will accept an infinite number of applications.

 Internet Explorer 8 or above, running on Windows, is the browser that is strongly recommended to successfully submit your application. If you choose to use another browser, your application may not come through successfully.

 Before applying, we recommend that you clear your browsing history including your temporary internet files and disable pop-up blockers.

 The online application process takes approximately 30 minutes. Be prepared to supply 10 years of work experience plus your high school information as well as any secondary education.

 Once in the application, be sure to use the links provided to return to the previous page if needed. The back button is not compatible with our system.

 A current resume is a required part of the application process. Once your application is submitted, your resume cannot be edited or deleted.

 Candidates are able to attach up to five letters of recommendation. To do this, they must click on the “My Career Tools” section on the careers page (upper right hand corner) and navigate to the section titled “Cover Letters and Attachments”. They will then be prompted to add attachment and list the document title.

 Please read each question with care and not rush through the application. This will ensure the application is processed correctly and given full consideration for an interview. Due to the selection process being highly competitive, it is critical the application has accurate information.

 Qualifications:
o 3000 hours total time (PIC requirement has been removed)
o ATP
o Four year degree
o First Class Medical
o Vision correctable to 20/20
o Non-user of nicotine products

Please encourage your referrals to apply during the week following February 11th, not necessarily on that date. As witnessed last time, too many candidates applying at the same time slows down the system and causes
possible inactivity.

If you look at the past several classes, you can see what we're looking for: USAF.

Or Great Lakes.

Seriously.
