How about some real news like, "Alaska Announces '04 Hiring to Begin ASAP"... I know, I know - that's not true... didn't want to get your hopes up.:D

Keep swimming. Some of those SWA poolies were treading water for two+ years.

I've been treading water for almost a year now...hopefully the pool will drain soon. My sources say late Feb at the earliest but not to hold my breath. I'll guess we'll just stand by to stand by. Has anyone else heard any rumblings of new hire classes to ease the burden of the summer flying schedule?

The "official" word at the schoolhouse is no new hires in 2004, but there seems to be a lot of talk about classes starting up sometime around June.

Just passing along what I hear. :)

I believe Dorie said it best... "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming."

Yes, I have a lot of time on my hands to watch videos with my kids.

Rhino,

That really cracks me up. About a month ago I bought "Nemo" for my five year old. So far we have watched it over a dozen times...and I can just hear Dory's voice now. Keep up the good spirits. You'll do great at Alaska (another "values" based company).

Skirt, just what does kid videos have to do with aviation interviews, and what is it's place on a professional message board?

BTW, not slamming, but have you started at your new job? Whats the strike price of your options? Your past seems to indicate that the recent stock fall is ALL YOUR FAULT!!;) ;)

Yep, all my fault! Good thing I didn't come here for the stock....I did learn a thing or two at my last employer about how stock can go down as fast as it goes up! At one time I did own close to half a million bucks of ESOP stock....too bad I couldn't exercise it. Now I am at a place where I can, but at the moment it isn't worth anything. Such is life.:)

Hope

flx757,

just keep telling us things like "maybe June"... even if it doesn't turn out to be true, at least we can hope until then... the last word I got via the AS training dept (BG), was the "official" word and that was only last week.

Rhino,

I guess I'll finally have to get Nemo for the kids... it's just an awful lot of work to get out of the house these days.

FL510GV,

Yes..BG and all the others at that level are telling us no hew hires in 2004, but some of the other instructors keep circulating the June-July rumors. So, we can always hope for the best.

Good luck. Maybe there will be some "official" good news sooner rather than later. :)

For what it is worth...

I hate to froth up the pool, but... in yesterdays union meeting, two pilots who have friends doing the back stroke said that they had been contacted and told to expect a March class. Don't know if it is true, just thought I would pass along what they said.

Don't hold your breath to long though guys. We are having some problems right now, and I don't think Mr Ayer himself really knows what is going on at the moment. They turned down a good package offered to them by ALPA in the recent negotiations. They have the blinders on and can think of nothing but "Vision 2010".

The general feeling up here is that right now we are a ship with out a rudder, just sort of drifting. Mr. Ayer does not have his hand on the tiller, there are to many V.P's in suits who want to sit around a table all day and form committees, rather than dig in and get the job done. There seems to be a lot of pride and little empire building going on down there. The attitude from "senior management" as they like to call themselves is that if they didn't think of it - it is not a good idea.

This is a great place to work, this is a great company - I just want us to stay true to our history and survive what ever bad ideas a V.P. in a suit can dream up.

More fuel for the rumor fire...

Hey guys,
I just heard from a few buddies poking around the training dept that my name, along with several others, was seen on a board concerning a possible upcoming training date. Hopefully they didn't confuse the "new classes" board with the "guys that can continue swimming laps indefinitely" board. Nothing official, just thought I'd pass it along. ~SeaSlam

Bulletin Board Browsing

flx757,

seen anything like SeaSlam's list around the training dept? Also, is there a list of poolies anywhere around there? If so, how many on that list? We're guessing 35+/-

Thanks for the inside view from the Ops building.

Added: Looking at your profile... you flew the 717. As an "old" Diesel 9-30 guy who also flew an airplane with those marvelous BMW/RR engines on it... How'd the -30 airframe fly with that sweet power bolted on the rear end? Must've been nice... great to have a guy like you at Alaska, with all your experience, in the training dept.

FL510GV,

I have not seen such a list around the building. I have really not been specifically looking for one like that, but I will keep my eyes and ears open. The main bulletin board where they post the upcoming training events only lists training scheduled for the current and the next month. But, there could be some "planning" type list that is not posted for everyone to see, but that could be stuck in someone's cublice, or something like that. Plus, there are training events listed in the computerized records system, but that too, ususally only goes for the current (and sometimes the following) month.

The 717 was a great flying aircraft. Lots of power for that airframe. I was only on it for a year, and never flew the "DC-9", only the MD-80, so I can't really compare it to the DC-9-32. But, like I said, it is a very nice aricraft, with a highly automated cockpit and very powerful (for that size airframe) engines.

Thanks for the compliment. I feel very fortunate to be with a company like Alaska Airlines, and plan to be around a long time. I'll see you when you eventually come through. Hopefully, it won't be too much longer.
