Alaska Airlines and American Airlines today jointly filed with the U.S. Department of Transportation to expand their current marketing cooperation and codeshare relationship in a move that, once approved by the DOT, will provide customers of both airlines convenient access to many more destinations and enhanced opportunities to earn and redeem frequent flyer miles.

For American, Alaska and Horizon Air, the expanded codeshare alliance will effectively extend the reach of the carriers’ route networks and significantly strengthen their presence in key markets.

Alaska has had its “AS” code on approximately 600 of American’s flights and has had a reciprocal frequent flyer agreement with American since 1999. Under the terms of the codeshare expansion filed today, American will place its code on approximately 450 flights operated by Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air, while Alaska’s code will now be placed on approximately 1,000 American-operated flights.

American and Alaska are planning the first phase of new codesharing to begin in early February 2004, pending approval by the DOT.

The Alaska/Horizon flights with the “AA” code will be within the western United States and Pacific Northwest, an area of the country where American has a limited presence, and on select Alaska-operated transcontinental services. Alaska will place its code on flights operated by American in the western U.S. mainland and to and from Hawaii; on select American transcontinental flights; on American’s services from the West Coast to AA’s mid-continent hubs; and on select flights beyond AA hubs – all areas where Alaska today has a limited number of flights.

"This agreement delivers real customer value," said Gregg Saretsky, executive vice president of marketing and planning for Alaska Airlines. "For Alaska and Horizon customers, expansion of the codeshare with American will mean access to more than 100 new destinations. Plus, they will benefit from the frequency, convenience and quality this expanded relationship will provide. Beyond that, we welcome the opportunity to serve additional American Airlines customers and to introduce them to Alaska and Horizon service."

“American’s first domestic codeshare opens up 30 new destinations for American’s customers in the Pacific Northwest,” said Henry Joyner, American’s senior vice president-Planning. “These additional destinations will help both business and leisure customers more conveniently fly American, while generating new traffic and revenue for the airline in a very cost-efficient way. In addition, we’ll be able to compete more effectively against airlines that already have extensive codeshare networks in place.

“As a result,” Joyner added, “this codeshare is entirely consistent with point two of American’s Turnaround Plan, which is to fly smart and give customers what they value.”

The expanded codesharing arrangement will complement each carrier’s route network; only four nonstop city-pair markets will be served by both carriers. In addition, the carriers will work to make the travel experience easy and convenient by co-locating their facilities at airports wherever possible. And, like today, both American and Alaska will continue to offer customers the ability to earn and redeem frequent flyer miles on one another.

Do you think there will be any implications on Alaska's hiring plans because of this? Keep the faith, hope to see you there soon!

This is a marketing thing. Alaska will still continue to grow slowly. So No, I don't see this having anything to do with further growth. This "vision 2010" has everything to do with near-term hiring. Hopefully it will be wrapped up soon and we can get on with kicking everybody's as*. Good Luck, Hope to see you here soon also.
