Here's a sign of changing times: Alaska Airlines is replacing American Airlines as one of the 20 stocks on the Dow Jones Transportation Average because the latter carrier filed for protection under Chapter 11 of the federal bankruptcy laws Tuesday.

Alaska Airlines has made money for the past 10 quarters, while American, a much bigger company, has lost money for 14 of the last 16 quarters, according to Bloomberg news.

Other airlines that are on the index, which is an average of the stock prices of the transportation firms, are Delta, Jet Blue, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines.

Other companies on the list include FedEx, UPS, CSX, Union Pacific, JB Hunt, Con-Way and Ryder.

American had been on the transportation average since 1970, while its parent company was added in 1982. The change takes effect before the markets open Friday.

More good news for ALK. Maybe they'll need a few more pilots, after all. Good luck AA guys.

In the wake of the bankruptcy of American Airlines' parent AMR Corp. , rivals like Alaska Air Group Inc. are expected to benefit.
The Wall Street Journal's Market Watch reports analysts believe that American Airlines is expected to cut its capacity by as much as 10 percent, providing opportunity for rivals like Seattle-based Alaska Air Group (NYSE: ALK) and analysts upped ALK's stock price target.

Isn't the idea of the index to track the whole industry? Shouldn't they keep AA as long as it's listed?

The problem with providing additional opportunities is that we have neither the pilots or equipment to capitalize on them.

Prior planning prevents poor performance....NOT.
