Good luck to all at Airways.

Pilots Union: US Airways Talks Break Down

The Associated Press - Monday, August 23, 2004

ARLINGTON, Va.
Talks between US Airways Group Inc. and the union representing pilots have broken down, the Air Line Pilots Association said Monday.

The announcement came days after union leaders said a new labor agreement could be struck soon.

"We are disappointed that the company's latest proposal failed to respond in any substantive way to our proposal of August 21," Jack Stephan, a spokesman for the US Airways pilots, said in a statement. The talks broke down Sunday, the statement said.

"We negotiated throughout the weekend and have provided (the pilots' union) with our response to their proposal," US Airways said in a statement. The statement said the air carrier expected to hear from the pilots.

US Airways has said that new labor deals with unions are necessary to avoid a return to bankruptcy court and possible liquidation. The airline has warned that bankruptcy looms if deals are not reached next by at least Sept. 30.

A deal with the pilots would be the first significant step in US Airways' plans to cut costs by $1.5 billion a year, including cutting labor costs by $800 million.

The airline has sought $295 million a year in concessions from pilots.

Generally, the pilots have been most receptive to renegotiating their contract. The pilots were also first to reach a new deal during US Airways' first trip into bankruptcy in 2002, when labor groups collectively made more than $1 billion a year in concessions.

A study commissioned by the pilots found earlier this month that a bankruptcy filing loomed as soon as mid-September unless management could implement reforms and cost savings.

US Airways is also seeking concessions from its flight attendants, machinists, and from the Communications Workers of America, which represents reservations agents and gate workers.

The pilots announced the breakdown in talks shortly before markets closed. Shares of US Airways fell a penny to close at $1.91 on the Nasdaq Stock Market. In after-hours trading they fell another 21 cents, or 11 percent.

Talk about being between a rock and a hard place...

Eventually it comes down to what you feel your worth is. Management is simply taking advantage of the curcumstances and trying to get everything on their wish list, just like every other airline out there. I personally have set a price for what I feel my expertise is worth, and if I don't get paid that than I am prepared to call it a career. That takes a gut check to be sure, but at what point are all of us going to say enough is enough? Tough times, with more ahead.

I feel for this entire pilot group, very sad and trying times for them. I have many friends at Airways and can only wish them the best of luck... This has nothing to do with them sticking to their guns and everything to do with them taking these required cuts. It is sometimes better to just swallow your pride and live to fight another day.

It is pretty simple and elementary, take these cuts which are unfortunate or take a chance on being unemployed and looking for work..

I think time is running out.

My idea:

Let's all get behind the U pilots and convince them not to cave in.

IF U stays solvent, we all win.

If U goes under, any U pilot gets to bring 50% of their DOH seniority to any ALPA airline they can get hired at. (As soon as they start hiring). They prevent the bar from lowering, we return the favor.

We're all on board for this, right?

riiiiiiight.....

if only we were in a different world my friend.

The pilot group are not the only ones that will be looking for employment should this ship sink. This will have a large impact on many many people.

I wish em all luck,

Aw c'mon. We can give 2 for 1 can't we?
How about we offer to the U pilot's the same deal they offered to the EAL pilots when U was buying up their aircraft?

What goes around..............................

Cutting to the bone....

Stay strong!!!!! Who knows where the cuts will stop even if you concede now the cuts could go deeper and deeper and deeper....

USAirways management won't stop until they can import pilots from India and pay them $1.50 per day with a small bowl of rice included if you smile a lot.

How's about they just hand them the SW contract and say this is the min.Heck US AIR gets less then SW now anyway. It would be a raise for most.
