AirTran Reportedly Coming to Charlotte
Wednesday February 16, 3:36 pm ET
By Tim Whitmire, Associated Press Writer Discount Carrier AirTran Reportedly Coming to Charlotte, Sources Say

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Discount carrier AirTran will begin flying from Charlotte-Douglas International Airport to Atlanta and Baltimore later this year, sources said Wednesday.

The move would bring a second discount carrier to an airport long dominated by US Airways Group, which is currently in bankruptcy for the second time in recent years.

Officials at Orlando, Fla.-based AirTran Holdings Inc. could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday. The airline has hubs in Atlanta and Orlando and offers service to 46 airports.

Airport officials scheduled a news conference for Thursday afternoon at which they said they would make a "major announcement" about service. Officials declined to speak publicly about the scheduled announcement.

The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said AirTran is to fly to both Baltimore and Atlanta, where the carrier has its primary hub. One of the sources said the carrier would fly three or four times per day to each city.

Service could begin within two to three months, assuming a normal schedule for starting operations.

Mike Boyd, a Colorado-based aviation analyst, said he believes AirTran's move into Charlotte is aimed at outflanking competitor Southwest Airlines Co., which recently announced service to Pittsburgh, a former US Airways hub.

He said Southwest is believed to be eyeing a move into Charlotte.

AirTran's entrance into the Charlotte market would give the city two discount carriers. Flyi Inc.'s Independence Air began flights from Charlotte to Washington D.C.'s Dulles International Airport in October.

In trading Wednesday afternoon, AirTran Holdings' shares fell 8 cents to $8.28 on the New York Stock Exchange. The stock has traded in a 52-week range of $7.40 to $15.56.

Didn't Airtran just commit to 10 gates (ex DL gates) at DFW too?

Southwest will put a stop to this!!!!

Not too likely.

We get along fine at BWI (30+ flights a day) or at PHL (19 flights a day), or MCO, or FLL, or TPA, or the other airports we both serve . . . . even MDW.

Go AirTran go!

You got that right....Congrats to Airtran for making a nice selection!

And could you please request flights every two hours to BWI from CLT just to make commuting easier. ;)

A good alternate now when wx is bad in ATL. Nothing is worse than diverting to an offline airport. Oh yeah, I hope we make money there. I think this one is a surprise to nobody.

AirTran in CLT

AirTran revealed a new piece of its strategy today when it announced its plans to begin operating from the Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Beginning May 4, 2005, the low-cost, low-fare carrier will operate daily nonstop service from Charlotte to both Baltimore and its Atlanta hub, using Boeing 717 aircraft with 12 business class and 105 coach seats.

AirTran said its entrance to this market will mean a downward trend in airfares for Charlotte. It will offer four daily flights between Charlotte and Atlanta, with a one-way walk-up fare of $189. For its two daily flights between Charlotte and Baltimore, AirTran’s lowest one-way walk-up fare is $157. For both markets, AirTran has a sample introductory one-way fare of $59. Taxes, fees and certain conditions apply.

Way to go AirTran Execs!! An excellent market. AirTran will lead the low-cost drive into Charlotte. The great people of Charlotte will love flying the newest airplanes in the industry for the lowest price.

For all you Airtran folks do you think there is any chance Airtran might offer NS between CLT and MDW? Or will flights most likely connect through ATL?

Southwest is just going to quietly sit back and let Airtran and USAirways beat each other's brains out for a little while, then come in later.

it seems to me that Air Tran is going after Delta in CLT with the ATL routes. Airways flies RJ's to ATL from CLT and I'm sure just matches Delta's pricing structure.

Well, I figured Airtran would eventually go into CLT, since they moved out of Greensboro. CLT has big banking companies there and probably a lot of business travelers. We just added some Comair CRJs form CLT to LGA and JFK, so Airtran will probably add LGA soon too. That's fine. USAir seems to be getting itself together (via AirWisc $125 million help) and that may hurt large CLT expansion for Airtran, since USAir may be around longer and keep the fares low. If USAir left town, then there would be a free for all---with everyone trying to grab the pieces. Could Airtran and Southwest co-exist at the same hub? BWI is an expample of that, but not all of the city pairs are the same from BWI. I am sure that could be the same in CLT---SW going to MDW, PVD, MHT, ISP, BNA, LAS, HOU, PHL, PIT,BWI,MCO, TPA, etc, while Airtran hits LGA, BOS, ATL, BWI, MCO, PHL, and FLL. But, the other winner with an USAir absence would be Delta---because a lot of the surrounding towns, like MYR, FAY, CRW, ROA, FLO, CAE, GSO, etc that are served by USAir Express would be left with only Delta Connection flights to ATL and CVG, and that is where we would rake in the bucks----to the cities that Southwest and Airtran would not serve---smaller to medium cities.

Yahtzee,

Since you all at SWA elbowed us out at MDW, I doubt that we will be offering nonstop service from CLT to MDW. But...you never know. Looking forward to seeing you out there!
