ORLANDO, Fla., Nov. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AirTran Airways, a subsidiary of AirTran Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: AAI), today announced that it will begin nonstop flights to San Juan, Puerto Rico. The fast-growing, low-fare carrier will begin flying between its hub at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and San Juan Luis Munoz Marin International Airport on March 5, 2008. AirTran Airways will launch daily, nonstop flights between Orlando International Airport and San Juan the same day and add a second daily, nonstop flight on April 9.

Bout time. They are really missing the boat on all the Mexico/Carribean flying. This is where they should be sending all of their new 737s.

I hate to say but goulet is right.
we should had started sju as soon as ATA pulled out of mco;instead we sat idle while JET BLUE opened not only sju but aguadilla also.now it's gonna be tough to make any money on that route.

You got to remember that we have feed from over 30 cities in the midwest direct to Orlando to help fill those seats. Heard that we are supposed to be near 90-100 departures a day out of Orlando by end of next summer. I guess we do have places to put those 10 new 737's coming next year.

I thought it was down to 7 deliveries for next year - 3 deferred?

SJU is an "ok" destination, wonder how the loads will be. Most travelers will likely want to continue on to St. Thomas, St. Martin, St Crois, etc. There's a few airlines running nonstops out of the U.S. to those cities... they're always full. Damn near couldn't get back to the U.S. last year when I went out to St. Croix.

At least it's a step in the right direction.

The order for 2008 is 10 aircraft as of now. That could be adjusted if fuel cost cause a significant slowdown in the economy. Orlando is the 2nd largest Puerto Rican population in the United States behind New York. AirTran just started non-stop service from LGA to MCO. There will probable be one-stop service from LGA to MCO on to San Juan in the spring, tapping into the large Puerto Rican base in both cities. I believe with Fornaro in the CEO seat more routes to the Carribean will be coming in 2008.

Naw, still a total of 10 deliveries next year per the last earnings call. Edit: Beat me to it.

We gonna be book solid no doubt;hopefuly profitable as well.a code share agreement with liat maybe something to explore.that would give us access to all the eastern carribean.
