It has finally happened! I got my big break with a great airline.

Just got offered a classdate with AirTran and can't type fast enough. After 5 years of waiting, my efforts have finally payed off.

Thanks to everybody on this forum for sharing so much info, giving advice and making our lifes so much more interessting by posting weird views once in a while...

Viva the Boeing Jets!!!!!

Info:

Class: May 27th
16 applicants and as of today just 1 more slot for that class date.
Employment package comes in the mail within a week.

Quick question:

I need to buy a new headset for the 717 possibly 737.
Looked at one that plugs in on one of your ears and could hang from your sun glasses or head strap. Does anybody recommend something like this?:D :D :D

Headsets are provided in the aircraft. Although some of them are a little on the grungie side. Buying your own is a personal choice, not required.

You can certainly buy your own Plantronics (soundslike that's what you're talking about).

the cheapest site I have found is www.marvgolden.com

About those "grungies', just call MX and have 'em replaced when you go through ATL . . . .

Interview was on April 1st.

Thanks for the advice on the Headsets. Do you recommend those Plantronics or should I go for something else?

I got mine through Marv Golden. I went for the Airman 750s just like we have on the airplane. It was just a personal choice, I preferred them to other types like the eyeglass clip ons. I can recommend Marv Golden for the best price.

Just make sure your headset is TSOd. Our FOM requires that any personal headsets are "approved" (TSOd).

I use the Telex earmold with the boom mic clipped on to the earmold istelf. It works just fine and leaves your other ear free to hear whatever it is your captain has decided to talk about once your pass through 10,000 feet. You don't get the "headset head" after a long day of flying. I find that headset head doesn't like hat head and the combination of the two scares the passangers.

Awesome job! I have my stuff in with AirTran as well.

So, if given the choice, would you take the 717 or the 737-700 if pay were equal to start?

Good job.

The pay IS equal to start...and remains so, unless that fact changes with future contracts.

Congrads on a class date.

As far as headset, I would highly recommend Telex 5x5 Pro III.
I tried Plantronix, and had problems with its mike, so I send it back and got Telex instead. Had it for over 4 years now with no complaines. Excellent quality. Marv Golden has pretty good deal on them.

Flight Station (Delta store) on Virginia Ave. will hook you up with an ear mold.

Just a suggestion, but if you want to save some money, you can wait for a while before spending your own coin for a headset. Just go to any supermarket and buy a bag of those plastic ladies hair curlers with the little foam things. A bag of ten costs about two bucks. Throw away the plastic part and you have a bag full of microphone covers. Most of the headsets on our airplanes don't have the microphone covers. Your little bag of covers are cheap, you can afford to lose them, and you won't be licking someone's cold germs. Works great, and you can take your time to decide what kind of headset you want to buy.

Islandhopper,

Congatulations!

How did you get the interview? Did you know someone at Airtran, go to a job fair, etc.

IF given choice between 717 and 737

flx 757,

Yes, I am aware of the equal pay for both types. I was asking what his choice would be IF he was given a choice between the 717 and 737... I'd be happy just to be employed there.

Dude, Hold on to your $$$. Headsets are provided for you, with little to no funk attached.

Congrats, see yopu on line> BuckO

Thanks for the info.

I agree that I'm jumping my guns now. Just too exited about getting the job.
After rethinking, it is best to just wait and see which headset works best. I like that hair curler foam idea...

If given the choice, I'll take the 737. I like the idea of making longer flights. Coming from a regional I'd like to be in the cockpit for a little longer than an hour. My understanding is that classes are being split for both aircraft. Last one had a total of 10 717 and 8 737 FOs.

I know a few guys at AirTran. I flew as a first officer with them years ago. They did make a couple calls for me and wrote a couple letters. I also got a letter from my DO that I think helped in getting the interview. Being an instructor/check airman didn't hurt either.

I attended an AirInc show right after my interview. I did get a chance to hang out and talk to the Airtran recruiters in LA.
I was told that AirInc definitely helps in getting you the interview. You still compit though against another 150 resumes (better than the 12000 they have to choose from at home)

Hope this info helps
