ALPA Prepares to Welcome AirTran Airways Pilots

NPA Votes Overwhelmingly to Merge with ALPA

  • Friday April 10, 2009, 1:20 pm EDT
WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), is extremely pleased by the AirTran pilots’ overwhelming vote in support of a merger with the world’s largest pilots union. A landslide 87% of AirTran pilots cast votes in support of merging with ALPA, with more than 94% of eligible AirTran pilots voting. The National Pilots Association (NPA) currently represents the nearly 1,700 pilots of AirTran Airways (NYSE: AAI - News).
“With this decisive vote, the AirTran pilots made it clear they want representation by a strong international union that is run by airline pilots and for airline pilots,” said Capt. John Prater, president of ALPA. “We look forward to working with the AirTran pilots and to providing the union’s unparalleled professional resources and expertise, as well as the support of other ALPA pilots in Atlanta and across the country, to help them achieve and enforce the fair contract they deserve.”
The merger decision must be ratified by ALPA’s Executive Board when it meets on April 28-29. If that happens as expected, the merger will be effective on May 1, 2009.
Founded in 1931, ALPA is the world’s largest pilots union representing more than 52,250 pilots at 35 airlines in the U.S. and Canada.

Please spread your venom somewhere else. The pilots at AirTran as a group stood up and made a decision. Most of us are proud of the 95% turnout to vote. It shows this pilot group has potential to make a difference with numbers like these. No union is perfect. But this is a fresh start for the AirTran pilots and a good day!

Great turnout, great vote. It's about time that we end the isolationism and join our fellow pilots in ALPA.

Like ALPA or hate em.....Airtran pilots don't have their head in the sand like the pilots in the blue shirts. Good for the Airtran turnout. Sends a unified message to management more than anything.

THERE, I've awaken the blue defenders......standing by for the incoming cheerleaders.

Congrats guys, you've got what you want now, make it work!

Incredibly great news!! I'm incredibly proud of my brothers and sisters at AirTran and hope this level of involvement holds as we move forward.

You can bet, if we continue to get such large numbers of pilots involved in shaping their own career, that things will change in Orlando, even if we have to drag them kicking and screaming along with us. ;)

Great job!

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank a certain senior Capt for his tireless efforts helping to ensure the large voter participation and huge margin of victory.

That's GREAT!!!!!

Now, Please tell Prater to go Eff himself...compliments of the former America West Pilots he so happily screwed over.

Prick.

Wow,

95% participation. Maybe the apathetic nature has turned.

88% yes. Wow.

Wow congrats! I remember when we were ALPA before ******************************

I've been moderated! I guess the truth about USAPA is a dirty word!

Congrats to all at AT. The "nay sayers" will always find something to bi#ch about, that's just the way they are. And we have to remember that ALPA is Us. We make it happen. It's a process that is sometimes slow, but without it, we are truly at the mercy of management's whims.
As a pilot who was wrongly diagnosed with a possible career ending medical condition, I can only say that all my ALPA dues were worth it. The support from the folks at ALPA Aeromedical division was crucial to maintaining my career and returning to the cockpit. I hope that none of you has to go through having your career wrongly ended from a midiagnosis. It's comforting to know that ALPA is there to help you through any situation......now I'll ge off my soapbox...........

95% participation rate? Wow, that's impressive. Congrats guys. I hope that 95% participation rate continues...

Same here. One thing's for sure. If it does, you guys will be a force to be reckoned with. Congratulations to all the Air Tran pilots . Best wishes for the future !
