I see lots of classic jet doing the airshow tour. How hard is it to get paid to do this.It seems most are airline pilots that do it for fun.But do they contact people in charge and see if there willing to pay to have there aircraft there?
It is getting harder and harder unless you can get some big name sponsor to flip the bill for your appearance. Airshow producers don't like to pay for acts or displays unless they have to.
When we take a jet somewhere for static... usually the only "pay" we get is a hotel room, performers banquet/meal of some kind, rental car, etc. Just to keep your own cost minimal for being there. No one is in the airshow business to get paid...
Another way airshows have compensated show aircraft is to offer them as much fuel as they can carry home. That's a big expense for a large aircraft and is usually the deciding factor for whether to attend or not, and it attracts smaller warbirds who's owners wouldn't otherwise want to spend the money to come. That policy might have been ended or restricted with fuel prices what they are.
Many of the airshow performers I have met who fly WWII or early jet aircraft have prior time in type from the military. Others are required to log many hundreds of hours in aircraft like T-6s and T-28s before insurance companies will cover them in something like a Mustang.
