Afternoon All -

Well my whopping $15K a year isn't paying the bills. HA! Imagine that! I was hoping that we could start a laundry list of second jobs that work with an airline schedule. I would be specifically interested in anything involving real estate.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions!

Oh yeah ... let's please not turn this into a "if we could halt the race to the bottom, then we wouldn't need second jobs" debate.

MKAY!

Ok but reality isn't much prettier. I've worked for promotion companies, been a DJ (weddings,frat/soho gig's, etc), delievered pizza. I found that all of these extra money makers are very flexible around the glamorous life of an airline pilot. I know quite a few people that have gotten thier real estate lic and seem to do pretty well there.......but I guess it is fairly time consuming and you have to have patience. Between flying and all of my part time gigs, I'm starting to realize why I'm getting nowhere in life fast, because I refuse to get a real job! Sure beats working though! By the way, can you spare a quarter? Good Luck to you and try and have some fun. Life is to short. AD

Real estate is a big one, I personally work construction, and make actually really decent money, almost if not double my income from first year FO pay. I got a good job were I set up my schedule when i can, and dont have to work only certain days, works for me.

"Sure beats working for a living!" .....God, I get so sick of hearing that. I think you were joking. Good one. If we were actually making a "living" or didn't have to spend 18+ days a month on the road doing it then maybe that would be a little easier to stomache. I hate to complain but it's hard to be proud of your profession when you have to spend over half the month on the road just to make 30k/year.

Try event promotions. The people that hand out stuff at ball games and busy spots in town, like gum, breath mints, credit card apps, etc. My cousin does that, shows up when she can and sometimes the gigs pay up to $250 a day. Not the most glamourous work but if you need flexible quick cash, not a bad way to go.

In addition to my glamorous charter pilot/flight instructor job, I have started doing trade show booth installation and removal. The money can be pretty good - $250-300 per day. I bring a small tool box (cordless drill, screwdrivers, etc..) and they provide most of the tools/equipment you need.
Try to find an "Exposition services" company in your area - they call me with a job and if I can do it I do. The bigger companies (nationwide) are GES, Nth Degree and a couple others I can't think of. You could also talk to people at your local convention hall, they would probably know the smaller local companies.

Before the market dried up, I'd do Construction thru a temp agency while sitting reserve. For a while I wasn't flying all that much so I'd take my uniform and put it in the car if I got called I'd leave.

Lately computer skills are my lil helper, I hire out freelance.

If you know anything about golf, you might want to try to be a looper. You know, a caddy. I've done this in the past and have made some pretty good coin ($100-$150 per loop). I also know a guy who was working at CarMax selling cars. They hire all kinds of part-timers.

Substitute teach. $95.00/day where I live and you can always set up a job that day if you're off. As long as no one gets hurt and I get a check it's a good day.

Hey spunky......read the post I didn't say " It sure beats working for a living".........I said "it beats working". Promotions, pizza driver, DJ, pilot......... when I sit back and look around when I'm at "work", I'm reminded that I love these jobs and I have fun while I'm doing them. They all pay crap, but I love em and that why I do em. I'm on my second airline here, which I know ain't shi.t to others on this board who have been though plently more than that, but you don't have to remind me or anyone else on this board about the downsides of this gig. Keep that fire though as you progress through your career....unfortunately at the regional level we have to fight for everything they don't think we are worth. Good luck AD

Chipindales---great tips.

I have a few $$ left over from my last jobs retirement fund, I sit at home on reserve (in my underwear) and day trade the NasDaq...in general I make more money doing that than I do as a pilot. It's a little more risky than a second job, but I am here to watch the market. If I get called I sell out and away I go.....

Hey guys,
Some options, one of which was already mentioned, are being teachers... You can be a Substitute Teacher here in the DFW Metroplex for somewhere around $75.00 to $100.00 a day... All you need to do is pass a background check (which I'm sure an airline pilot can easily do) and you're set to go... Some school districts require a two or four year degree and some require none at all. But remember how you treated your subs when you were a kid and think long and hard about this one. To be honest, the kids you'll be teaching are much like senior airline management that you already deal with... They'll take advantage of you and try to convince you that they're doing you a favor. Hee, hee...
Second, contact your local community college and talk to department heads about being Adjunct Faculty. In this case, you generally teach a class one night a week for the semester, and the pay was about $1500.00 per class, per semester. I once taught a couple of classes and it produced about an extra $1000.00 a month. It was easy and I really, really enjoyed it.
The only other option I have been contemplating is submitting a resume to the Medallin, Columbia drug cartels... There is no sim ride, (though this is where your commercial maneuvers like turns around a "drop spot" will really come in handy) and they wont alert your current crew scheduling to the extra hours you'll be flying. I'm kidding of course.
Good luck and big bucks!

office manager of a temp agency. Trying to use my worthless degreee to something good.
In hopes of that day when one job IS enough!
Yea right!

Funeral Home "Runner". I've been doing it for about a year now. $12/hr, I say when I'm available, reserve short call while 'running' = no problem, minimal gross stuff, profound personal growth experience (seriously!).

Look at your local hospital. You can work in security, patient registration, lab courier etc. Pay is usually 10-20/hr maybe more with shift diff. It's how I paid the bills while working at Commutair and how I pay the bills now that I am out of a job at Piedmont.

CA$H

I've been Valet parking at a hotel since I got furloughed post 9-11. Its good cash money if you can find a hotel or something. I still manage to flight instruct during the day, and pick up evening shifts on-call.

I work at the counter at one of the FBOs at the airport on the weekends. Most of the fuelers are also instructors at other schools in ADS.

That substitute gig sounds kinda cool. Easy money to pick on rugrats... you can hypnotize them for hours about your pilot stories. "Good morning class. My name is Captain Smith. That's right, I am airline pilot."

BWA HA HA...

substitute teaching....pay is depending on your area. major metro cities pay big...smaller ones pay about what youd make elsewhere. in this town im in....its $65 a day....minus tax.
im doing the security guard bit for a short while....and thats $65 a day...minus tax...and i dont have little kids...i dont have to do crap. i can even get away with listening to the radio and occasionally stealing peeks at a newspaper/crossword or what not. aint bad...just not enough to do really.

whats the pros and cons of being the real-estate guy? how much BS is there and how long does it take to get the license? type ratings involved? :>
