I have a question for current airline pilots. Eventually, the airlines will start hiring again. Let's use Southwest Airlines for an example. Individuals attend an interview at SWA. All the interviewees are well qualified to to flying for SWA. But in the end, only the few luck ones get the job offer from Southwest. WHAT non-flying qualities does the recruiting powers that be at Southwest determine whether or not to hire a person to fly for the company?

College degree , masters degree, military, can you speak English, type of experience, credit rating, where you live, does your belt match your shoes, do you look like the guy that cut in line in-front of the interviewer last week...that is a far too vague question...and there are many, many answers.

I think a lot of interviewers look for someone that has even a remote interest in the other people in the room. The best thing you can do in an interview is ask the people on the other side of the table a question about themselves. JP

" ask... a question about themselves..."

NOT a good idea IMHO.

Can you give an example?

You mean like:

- " Where did you get THOSE shoes?"

- " Is that a picture of your Daughter? How old is she?"

- " Do you really like working here?"

- " Do you think these pants make my c ock look too big?"

I would get the logbooks updated, Hiring may happen at the airlines sooner than many think.

Best advice is be honest, do not cross your arms or legs, do not lean back, use the STAR method to answer you questions, (DAL loves this) and have a point to every answer that you arrive to quickly and thoroughly.

Also make sure your log books, resume, application and other required documentation is flawless and done correctly. It is quite annoying to the interviewers to have to spend 30 minutes in "inconsistencies" in your application or other documents. Remember that this is what they do and your little error is just the same error that another guy made earlier, the day before and the day before that. It gets old.

It's the same as interviewing for any other competitive position. Interviewers want somebody who will be a good employee and will get along with others.

You'd never make it to the interview if you weren't fully qualified, so mostly they are just trying to find out the intangibles. Honesty, integrity, responsibility, etc. Never blame anything on someone else, don't talk bad about former employers. Mostly they are just trying to figure out if they could stand to be in the cockpit with you for four days straight.

Airlines still losing billions of dollars every year, economy still shedding close to 200,000 jobs a month, unemployment rate at 10.2%, and a million people are still getting kicked out of their house every 3 months. The current administration could probably use you in DC helping improve consumer confidence. I don't see the airlines doing any major hiring over the next couple years but hopefully I am wrong.

You are not wrong... It will be far longer than anyone around here thinks (at least before any of the decent airlines hire in any significant numbers again.)

The economy is still a serious wreck, the dollar is dropping faster than Gen Lee's sister's pink panties, and Obama is doing everything he can to ensure that we wind up as a second-rate two-bit POS european style economy.... (Just spreading the misery around.)

These silly experiments with socialism have been tried before, and they have always wrecked every country they were applied to. The turning point will come when the political winds change. When we get some people in congress who have some inkling of an idea that the resources of our government are not limitless, things will pick up. As long as nancy, barney, and barak are continuing this insane spending orgy, things are gonna really, really suck.

-It is gonna be a while. A long, long while.

(Barak Hussein Obama, mmmm, mmmm, moron.)

I hope "SWA" was just a random example. We barely have a people dept. anymore in Dallas. I don't see pilot interviews for at least 3 more years.
