This could be following the same path as the Boeing rudder servo problem. After the COS hardover rudder they blamed it on anything but mechanical failure. The loss of another plane and many near losses and studies and they finally admit that it did have a problem and fixed it. But the corporate inertia aligned against finding something other than pilot error or freak weather (supposedly a "mountain rotor" gust of wind on a perfectly clear and calm day flipped a 737 upside down on short final in COS?!) was powerful and took years to correct.
