Is it worth attending the Air Inc conference for FEDEX and UPS? I've got people walking my apps in and have some LORs but haven't actually done any sort of "Meet and Greet" with the company. Does anyone know if it's worth the $$ to hit the Air Inc conference and get some face time?

Thanks

Wojo

UPS and FEDEX job fairs . . .

Wojo,
I attended the recent conference in Dallas on the 22nd of Jan. I got the message that both FEDEX and UPS didnt want anything to do with you, if you did not have internal references. Dont waste your time or money going to a job fair if you already have the inside track with rec's and apps. BTW, UPS all but indicated they were done hiring for the year anyway. Overall I was not impressed by big "Brown's " presentation and attitude during the conference. They did reluctantly take a copy of my resume, however.

UPS (like many airlines) has ALWAYS required letters of recommendation from current employees who have observed your flying/crm skills as a means of "weeding down" the applicant pool. Last I heard they had in excess of 8000 pilot resumes on file. My personal belief is these seminars are a waste of time/money.

As far as hiring ... UPS has OFFICIALLY increased this year's number to 125 from 100. (Heard through the grapevine that at the last Air Inc seminar the UPS rep said we would only hire 60 this year. That should give you an indication of the quality of the personnel UPS sends to these seminars and the accuracy of the information they spew.) Unofficially look for 250-300. Hiring should be substantial for several years based on retirements and aircraft acquisitions.

I agree with BBB... I have been told to expect atleast 200+ and that is a conservative number. I dont think anyone from UPS would go to Air Inc and put out mis-information, however I do think that things change here from day to day and at the time of the last conference, the info "might" have been on target with what the people at HR were being told.

Another way to look at this is. The info put out at the Air-Inc was 60 pilots total. Maybe the HR guy meant 60 pilots, not FE's to be hired. That would jive with the 125 number currently on the books because we currently have about 60 FE's hired so far. Im sure the numbers will be modified again and again as the year goes by.

Other things to think about... (4) MD-11 an (7) A-300 will be delivered this year as well as the yet to be mentioned (11) MD-11 coming from Swiss Air that are going to start to be delivered starting first Quarter (NOW) 05 - 07. We will need crews to staff these aircraft, as well as a new contract being settled (hopfully this year) and the retirments that will come from that, from the over 60 guys and the soon to be 60 year old guys. Ive also been told that soon UPS will start some sort of Postal contract similar to FedEx only on a smaller scale. The Menlo Contract will most likely come to us and will probably yield with consolidation approx 25-30 more routes out of Dayton. More flying and the need for more pilots... I would think that both UPS and FedEx will both be in the hiring mode (150-225) a year for next few years. Atleast Im hoping...

I say go to the Air Inc thing. It cant hurt and It never is a bad thing to possibly make an impression with one of the HR people that might see you later at an interview... It will be money well spent...

Why were they at the job fair then? Are you sure this is just because you attended the job fair in your old Spuds Mckenzie Budweiser t-shirt, and walked around with a six pack of schlitts and a cigarette? Just kidding..

Maybe recent FedEx interviewees can shed some light, but it is my understanding that if your sponsor does not arrange a "face-to-face" with an Assistant Chief Pilot/Chief Pilot you will not get an interview @ FX. I don't believe a LOR, nor a "walked-in" resume is good enough any longer. I believe this is a recent change in policy. What say you:confused: Wojo I wouldn't waste my time, nor money on an Air Inc conference.

Fox3,

As I understand it now, the CANDIDATE doesnt' have to do the face to face, but the sponsor should. However, if other guys are going in, I would guess that the minimum has become inflated.

I was talking to an ACP about arranging a meeting with him for a guy I'm sponsoring and the ACP said "Ya know, he doesn't have to come in here, just you". So, for what that's worth.

VaB: That is how I understand the "new" process also. Unfortunately I have been banned from it, you know, for being too good.

Apologies to Michael Keaton in Night Shift.
