If you have been keeping up with the company memo's put out on the colgan air crew website you know that management is telling us that if we were to unionize things would change. We would not be able to negotiate anything with management and everything would now have to go through a union.
I do believe that there are valid points to the argument that things are not that bad at colgan and we don't want a union to come in here and screw it up. There are a lot of very good things about this company that we have all heard before.
MY question is what happens after the "foreseeable future" of the Colgan family staying in management? We have NO indication of when or if a change in management would happen. But if it did, and it might, WHAT would the new dynamic be? We have to face the fact that the Colgans are not completely in the drivers seat anymore.
We would probably have a bunch of highly trained money counters whose sole goal in life is to boost the stock price, get their bonuses and buy yachts. It would become very impersonal and the "open lines" of communication would probably completely dissappear.
What protections would we have from the new management coming in and imposing anything they want on us to make us more productive and cut their operating costs? Especially if in a year or two there is another industry downturn and pilots become a dime a dozen commodity again.
