Hello, I am planning on getting my private pilot license upon my return from from Afghanistan. Just wanted to know if I will need to buy a headset or not or is it recommended to do so? If so what should I look for? I am a Helicopter pilot in the Army.

You will need a headset. You can find some headsets for around $100. High end models (Bose X) upwards of $1000. I had an avcom AC-900. It was 200 and did the job. Lots of places will let you demo headsets before you buy.

I love my new Litespeed(sp). It's got the hookup thingy for the cell phone or mp3 player. I wish I had that for my long Commercial xc flight...would have made the 6 hours go by MUCH quicker. At $325, I didn't think it was that bad of a deal.

The lightspeeds are hard to beat. After running around with an SPH-5, your head will feel like it's going to float right off your shoulders with the lightspeed on. Light and comfortable, and very quiet.

Fly safe, return safe, and as always, a resounding thanks for the job which you do!!!!!

Thank you all, I didnt expect such a quick response. I can't wait to be home veturing in my new goal. Sounds like lightspeed is very popular choice I am a little familiar with David Clarks which is what the army uses for the VIP's and most of those headsets are in very old and in poor condition. I wear a HGU-56 at work it is not to bad but it will be nice to fly around with something lighter and with more airflow. I am also interested in active noise cancellation. I will continue to be gratefull for all your comments and advise.

For piston flying, I've always used the tried & true David Clark 1030. They've been pretty abused over the last four years, but they've held together wonderfully, and I wouldn't hesitate to ever buy another set. They're as good of a headset now as they were when they first came out of the box. You can pick a 1030 up for around $250, maybe cheaper if you really shop around.

Good luck!

I've used a Sennheiser 300 with the ANR for about a year and a half now. Not too bad. I've tried the Bose in a King Air and they're excellent, but I can't justify shelling out a grand for them. I get pressure points from most headsets (Bose Included) probably b/c of my fat head. I've also had the Sigtronics ANR model, but I don't think the sound quality was as good as the others.
