American Airlines Likely to Rehire Some Pilots to Replace Hundreds of Retiring Captains

DALLAS (AP) -- American Airlines says it plans next year to recall a portion of the 2,400 pilots it has laid off since 2001 to replace hundreds of retiring captains.
The number of pilots to be rehired is unclear. The airline says about 300 of its 10,000 pilots retire each year.

American, the biggest U.S. carrier, is expanding capacity by about 6 percent this year. However, much of that is by replacing seats that had been removed to make more legroom and won't increase demand for pilots.

The airline might also need more pilots if it wins the right to begin new flights to China.

Company officials have told employees that American hopes to begin service from Chicago's O'Hare International Airport to Shanghai and Hong Kong. American still needs approval from China to fly the routes.

The China service would add about 100 pilots, according to union officials, The Dallas Morning News reported.

The Fort Worth-based carrier would like to boost its profile in Asia. This year, it added service between Los Angeles and Tokyo.

In midday trading on the New York Stock Exchange, shares of American's parent AMR Corp. were down 27 cents at $11.43.

This was put out by the company at a domicile meeting last month. It's really a no brainer given the manning levels right now, schedule growth and retirements. IMO, they're metering out good news now in hopes of influencing the APA elections next month.

American Airlines says it plans next yea

NEXT year, not this year.....

(I rread it too fast as well:D )

Plans to recall next year has always been in the cards, not sure why they put out this press release..I jumped at first, then settled down after reading the fine print....

What is going to be really interesting when all the Majors start recalling is this:

How many people at AWA, jBlue, ATA, AirTran, Frontier, Spirit, etc., that have been saying how happy they are will jump ship to the majors the second they are given the chance....or how many furloughed guys that went to the LCCs will leave their new homes for their old ones.

The next few years will be interesting.

Anyone out there that has been furloughed have an idea on the historical return rates of furloughed pilots? Is it half or more like 100%?

I wonder if there are quite a few lessons learned by those who were furloughed by USAir...then went to SWA...then back to USAir....only if they would have stayed at SWA!!!!! I think a lot of furloughed pilots at LCC are taking a look at the big picture...

Many of the furloughed AA/TWA pilots that I know hate AA with a passion.

Anbody that's landed a job at SW, JB, AirTran etc. probably won't go back unless they're getting near retirement. But some need to build up their retirement plan quickly over the next few years.

The folks that were only at AA a short time or who are still young have to look further down the road. Given that we're looking at the "Wal-Mart" effect in the aviation industry it's probably not a good idea to quit a growing LLC and go back to Nordstroms. That's especially true if you despise the corporate culture.

"Free Crab Tomorrow"!!!

Cheers!

Why leave a good job to go back to one of the lowest paid "majors" with a retirement plan in jeapordy and the worst corporate culture outside of the former Communist Bloc?TC
