The 19 757's are from TWA that are powered by GE Engines. Since the rest of the AA 757 fleet is Rolls Royce it makes sense that they return these leased aircraft that are too expensive to operate.

I agree it sucks but when you are trying to save money its best to get away from different fleet types.

Digging a little deeper, the significance of engine manufacturers is that DAL has a fleet of 757 with P&W engines and they would would like to expand that fleet to back fill the domestic 767s they are converting for international use.

Well lets be honest here, there is a huge difference between the size of JB and AA.

46 less planes to fly somewhere in the AA system at any time. Good way to p1ss of customers that can't buy a ticket because of unavailability. It's the reason my company hasn't bought me a ticket on them for a while, instead I have to fly 2 or 3 leg trips (taking all day) through all corners of the country to get where I'm supposed to go. And it used to be so easy on AA. sometimes non-stop, sometimes 1 stop.

DAL closed hubs and scrapped flights all to save money. I don't see how it helped them, they still lose money like there is no tomorrow. They are trying to fill the hole over the back of the employees, but even that hasn't helped. It would not surprise me if a lot of their customers are now flying on expanding carriers that are able to offer more seats on more flights to more destinations (Airtran?)

Koolaid talk? Go check out the B6 selling 5 planes thread. Jb pilots on this board play nothing but defense. I actually came to this thread to compare how the AA situation is being treated considering all the harsh talk on that other thread. What a joke. This board is f-in lame.

But it sounds as if they will yank the other 24 S80s out of the desert to replace the seats lost on the 757s.

If you read the reports from the company they state that. Redding also confirmed it through the CKA we had in the jumpseat 2 days ago. AA is finalizing their 2007 flying schedule now.

Nothing for sure, but they are in short term storage, and could be brought back very quickly. A lot will depend on oil, and our profits this year.

Because most of these airplanes will not be returned until later in 2007 and the 2007 operating plan is in development, it is not clear how this will affect employees.

What is the schedule for returning the aircraft?

Leases expire in 2007 and 2008. The first aircraft will be returned in January 2007 and the last in March 2008. Some maintenance work will be performed on the on the aircraft prior to the lease return.

How does this decision affect future capacity plans?

The process of building the 2007 capacity plan is just beginning. Routes flown in 2007 will depend on factors such as route profitability, state of the industry and the economy, and the ability to increase utilization as a result of simplification and other efficiency efforts. If the environment improves, American has 27 MD80s in temporary storage.

Imagine that. Returning airplanes to take capacity out of a market with too much capacity and (until very recently) little ability to raise fares. If they announced a buy everyone would bitch about putting excess capacity in the market. Some people live to whine.
