Another CFI excited about the continued reduction of the legacy airlines! And yet you have a 757 in your avtar, what an a$$.

Wishing you everything you deserve in your future job.

This isn't the first or probably the last time for that matter that American comes into and pulls out of Midway. Been at least 3 times that I can remember in the last 20 years.

American to leave Midway

No layoffs expected as 5 daily flights to Texas end Sept. 1

The world's largest commercial carrier will leave Midway International Airport this year.

American Airlines has notified city aviation officials it will cease flights from Midway on Sept. 1.

The airline has only five daily departures from Midway, all to its hub at Dallas-Ft. Worth International Airport. Although American's presence at the airport is small, accounting for less than 2 percent of passengers departing annually, its departure increases the dominance of discount airlines at Midway.

An American spokesman would confirm only that the airline is considering schedule changes in the fall that could affect Midway. However, the Chicago Department of Aviation said it has been notified that the carrier has decided to suspend service at the Southwest Side airport.

The decision does not affect O'Hare International Airport, where American and its regional carrier, American Eagle, combine for 520 daily departures.

Like American, United Airlines also has maintained a small presence at Midway. Elk Grove Township-based United serves only its Denver and Washington, D.C., hubs from the airport.

American has been in and out of Midway several times over the years, as it tried new service offerings. It has been at Midway this time around for about five years.

"They've been in and out of Midway like a yo-yo over the years," said airline analyst Michael Boyd. "This isn't a market that does a whole lot for them."

American's Midwest commitment is at O'Hare, not a smattering of flights from Midway, Boyd said.

Locally, the market has developed with mostly low-cost carriers at Midway and larger, international airlines at O'Hare. No discounter has a large presence at O'Hare, while the country's most successful low-fare carrier, Southwest Airlines, dominates the market at Midway.

The Midway decision is not expected to result in layoffs. The airline uses a Continental Airlines gate at Midway and contracts with Continental to provide ticketing and boarding services.

American has said it plans to reduce capacity, a move the airline hopes will reduce costs and result in some planes flying more full. Unlike most of its major rivals, American has not sought bankruptcy protection, but it has been under pressure to reduce costs and return to profitability. The carrier plans to cut 27 aircraft from its fleet by the summer

The carrier's decision to pull out of Midway will leave two airlines serving the Dallas market, ATA Airlines and AirTran Airways. Instead of 12 daily flights to Dallas from Midway, there will be seven.

Southwest Airlines does not fly to the Dallas-Ft. Worth airport. Southwest does fly to Dallas' Love Field, but federal law restricts which states can be served from Love.

I once heard an American VP joke to another the best way to handle operations at MDW was to attach the ticket counters to the wall with velcro.

Eagle already flew CRJs DFW-MDW. I guess they're pulling out too.

And the people most upset over the elimination of service.........SWA Commuters. It's a crazy world were living in!

Out of Midway and into LUV? WTFO?

Maybe they want to concentrate on their bread and butter at the hub. Oh wait, ORD-MDW DAL-DFW nevermind.

Why should they care?

TZ still has 4 flights/day, and FL starts(ed) 3/day this month. SWA commuters won't feel the effects.

AA's DFW-MDW ops were in direct response to TZ's ops.

$25 bucks to get the 2nd jumpseat on AAI will scare away a lot of SWA Captains.

Thank goodness some things never change! ;) TC

P.S.--You're not a REAL airline captain until you've collected van tips from your crew only to stiff the van driver. OR... Brought your burnt out light bulbs from home, replacing the ones in your hotel room and taking the good ones. The REAL pros then call maintenance to replace the burnt out ones with BRAND NEW light bulbs! I'm sooooo proud... ;)

Of course there are no layoffs expected...they used one of the CAL gates and CAL personnel to handle the AA flights at MDW.

Can't ever remember seeing an AA employee there...other than those that flew in on the airplane.

No doubt those airplanes will be used somewhere else.

I was alluding to the irony of the situation. I was not snubbing TZ with my comments. I know the bulk of commuters have been using both TZ, and AA.

Its all about you AAflyer. AA pulls out MDW...who cares?..its a secondary market to O'Hare anyway for your company. DFW is offering discounts to new entrants in Dallas (they are hoping for international capable aircraft) with E Terminal half empty and a new international terminal. With the airport hurting do you really think anything is going to happen with Love i.e. the Wright amendment? You are so self absorbed, you attack this guys avatar, when your foolish dreams or desires to see an AA 747-400 is on yours. How nice of you to imply that this individual should only apply to legacy carriers, when your company has 2500 pilots on the street. I think your the A$$!

Sincerely,

TC,

I remember giving you my dollar tip for that van to the hotel. You said you would pay for the crew. That explains the dirty looks from the driver the next day.

The airport may be offering incentives, but AMR will do everything possible to drive you out of town! I've noticed that they've spread out their operation to make it look like they own the airport, i.e. all of terminals A and C, 2/3 of E and more than half of B. Doesn't leave a whole lot of room.

Don't get it

I don't get it. I flew to MDW all month last month.(DFW-MDW) We left most times with 70 Seats filled up. It was a good thing, or so it seems. One thing I did notice was that ATC didn't treat us equally with SWA. Looks like all those parties for ATC folks are worth it for the special treatment.

.....On second though, I might not be getting it here. Is American and Eagle going at the same time and it is American that will cease ops there?
