How does one go about obtaining subsidized loans for flight training?

Here's my situation. I am enrolled in a continuing education program at a local college for my flight training. For the PPL course its like 6 credit hours or something. I'm also a full time student at the University. I am in the middle of applying for financial aid for the university right now, but I need some money for flying. I am entering the AFROTC program at the U, but they won't help with flying until I am selected for a pilot slot. (I will be applying for the slot in the spring.) And to be considered a strong applicant for the pilot slot I need at least my PPL. Kind of a catch -22.

Will the government help me out with flying? Can I get regular subsidized loans just for a PPL? Somebody said something about Far West bank or something.

Any good leads would be appreciated. Thanks.

enroll in a 141 flight school like spartan or riddle. a 141 school will qualify for federal student loans just like any other college.

Well I'm in a 141 school, but I'm doing 61 at it. If I need to switch over to get money I will, but I'd really like to stick with 61. The school hasn't been real helpful as far as locating financial aid, but I haven't talked to the right people I think.

I'm working on it, but I've got to get some danm money to keep up the pace I'm on.

I highly doubt you can get a subsidized loan for any flight training, even a 141 school, unless it's through a college. You will have to get an unsubsidized one.

spartan had federal stafford subsidized and unsubsidized loans. Thats where I went and the money was a 50/50 split between sub and unsub. You can try them.

You have to be able to get a college degree with the program to get financial aid. Mine was an associates of applied science - aviation.

I to went to spartan. They can get any type of gov't loan that is available. I got a pell grant once for Spartan. We have a setup agreement at my FBO through Utah Valley State. We can get loans through them and continue flying that way.

As long as the school is acredited in one way or another you should be able to get all the loans that are needed. Now whether the school lets you use your money for flying or for classes is entirely up to the school.

Good luck.
