A Crisis That Tops Them All

Most of us here at SWA are proud of our past accomplishments. However, one of the best ways for us to start a turn for the worse, is to let that pride become arrogance.

If we're not careful we will be our own worst enemy.

I got to agree with Xanders post... I dont want to see any airline fail, SW is no 5 for me, all the past ones are gone, and I empathize with every single airline employee who is watching the cost of fuel skyrocket, and their employers losses mount. Still, what concerns me is as a Nation, we are not addressing consumption. I am sick of seeing a 125 pound mom picking up her kids in a 3 mpg Humvee. Admittedly, my wife drives a Tahoe, because I don't feel safe with her and the kids in anything smaller. Defensive driving now means being in a vehicle that can sustain an impact from some other knucklehead in an SUV that was talking on a cell phone and not paying attention. I was a new driver in the oil embargo and rationing in the 70's, and people talked about what they could do... carpooled, etc, etc. Back then, people who drove gas guzzlers were sort of ridiculed...I dont hear that now, just how much more it's gonna cost to keep on doing what we are doing. Perhaps if gas went to $10./gal, we'd get off the stick and start persuing some other energy sources. I'm no engineer, but no one will ever convince me it takes 200+ horsepower to get to the store for a pack of smokes. A beetle had 38 HP, got 20+ mpg, and could be overhauled for 300 bucks, but to drive one today is asking to get run over.

Maybe that woman feels it is a safer car, so to heck with gas consumption. I think she has as much right as you, don't you agree?

As for safety in larger cars, sure, they may be safer, but why are smaller cars unsafe, is it inherent? No, the problem is, that when a Escalade hits a Corolla, well, guess who "wins", just like your Tahoe and a semitruck.

Turn&Pull is right. Man, can you bro's dial it down a notch or two? It's nice to be proud and confident but jeez. We've got a major U.S. City in chaos, oil topping $70 a barrel, Jet A at 1.90/gal. (was .80 cents not all that long ago) - auto gas at $3.25/gal. - record budget deficit, along with the continued threat of terrorism. Should this economy tank big time, watch out because we all will be affected.

They said we would never win in Texas. Then they said we would never win in California. No way Southwest would ever fly and make money on the East Coast. Southwest takes 8 legs to fly coast to coast, they could never do it nonstop. Putting Southwest and "cannot" in the same sentence, priceless.

Like the monkey in the zoo that can't stop beating off! It must feel good to you but it looks like crap to the rest of us.

Priceless? I'll tell you what is priceless. It is priceless to see how quickly what was once a pretty cool group of pilots, devoid of a-holes by any comparison, can find a new, unprecedented level of arrogance.

What makes your crap attitude worse than anything we ever saw from the likes of any pilot group before is that it no longer translates. Wars, SARS, terrorism, $70 dollar oil, natural disasters, etc. have precluded any sort vengful victory you wish to chalk up. You have a great job; Good for you. Now, how about you enjoy a nice hot cup of shut the f_ck up!

Here is an idea

This is outside the box:

Lets band together UAL, CAL, DAL, NWA, AWA, and AA employee groups and, forming a consortium, we can find a median payscale that we can assign to a low cost B737 operation (something like Ted). Lets take that directly to Wall Street (bypass our managements and work directly with shareholders or the boards) and seek funding to buy Southwest. I'm betting we could attract some deal based on the fact that if you projected "Ted like" pay onto the SWA operation it will throw off a ton of money quickly. Certainly within the time the fuel hedges are valid we can cash out the immediate financiers. Then break up the SWA operation via an auction-like sale between the remaining airlines. Close the book on SWA and restore airfares to what they are supposed to be.
