(CNN) -- A United Airlines 787 Dreamliner en route from Houston to Newark diverted to New Orleans on Tuesday due to a mechanical issue with the new aircraft, the airline said.
United did not offer any details on what caused Flight 1146 to detour, but the jetliner with 174 passengers and 10 crew landed safely at Louis B. Armstrong International Airport.
Passengers were placed on another plane to Newark, United said.
United spokeswoman Christen David said the carrier would review the diversion and work with Boeing, the plane's manufacturer, to find out what occurred. The plane remained in New Orleans.
After years of manufacturing delays and cost overruns, the Dreamliner made its international debut last year.
United is the first U.S. carrier to fly the $200 million jet that has been touted for its fuel efficiency, innovative and lightweight construction and long-haul capabilities.

Audio of the United 787 unscheduled landing at MSY is here.

In case you don't have time to listen, the pilot asks that fire trucks check out the fuselage just aft of the wings for 'melting plastic or anything'.

Nothing interesting is noted, and the airplane taxis to the gate.

The wife of one of our pilots was on that flight. She said the cabin lighting began flickering on and off just before the aircraft diverted to MSY. She also said they were just south of Memphis when they began their divert...

Guess if it was a really big IFE they would not have flown damn near the way back to Houston, they'd of dropped into MEM...

Besides we've got better BBQ than New Orleans... :pimp:

Yep, quite an interesting divert when you're requesting CFR...

New Orleans is a good place to get stuck with a broken airplane. ;) Good airmen always think way ahead......

This plane was a disaster and bad idea from the start. Plastic junk. Looks pretty and that's about it...
