Just curious to your thoughts on which would make you more marketable. Just want to settle a little dispute with a CFI.

The only company that would care if you had a type rating is Southwest.

Any heavy type rating is worthless without experience.

I agree with Thedude.

With the exception of for SWA, which requires a type rating in the 737 prior to beginning class, having a type in either (or any other aircraft, for that matter) without also having significant time in that type would really do nothing to increase your maketability.

(Looks like Dragin beat me to the post by a second...:) )

Thanks....you guys answered yet another question off ours. I have just seen so many posts about getting a type rating paid for while you are furloughed and thought that there was some reason why so many would want to get a type rating, yet not get any real experience in it. Anyway thanks for the posts.

BTW...I have read on other posts that SWA has dropped the 737 type rating requirement. Don't know if there is any truth to this or not...just passing info I have seen

It's not always the case with furloughed pilots that they have no experience in the 737 or other aircaft that they are seeking a type rating in. Many furloughed pilots might have well over 1,000 hours in a 737, but no type rating. In their case a type rating might make sense.

Looks like many AF pilots are going to get free types in the 767 with the new tanker program. Not a bad deal. Also, I am no expert on Southwest hiring, but wouldn't it make sense that even though the type is not required, you would be in a lot better shape with it? If I really wanted to fly for them, I'd get the type even with zero 737 experience. Before you do that though, make sure you will be OK with that expense no matter what the outcome.

Most states allow a maximum of $8000 for WIA funds. That is why just about EVERYONE offers the 737 type for $7995. The 757/767 type, however, costs $15000. That's what stopped my plans for the 757/767 type rating.

Type Ratings

With the number of airlines getting Airbus A320s,A319s, an airbus type rating wouldnt hurt. It was probably one of the more difficult airplanes I have had to learn! Years ago, start ups used B737s but now its Airbuses
