Just helped a couple friends pull an aluminum tank from a 172 (1965 maybe?) that had a 0.5" hairline crack in the bottom and was dumping gas from the wing root..... are cracks like that a common problem on older tanks?

I would say they're not un-common. More often, 172 tanks crack around the base of the filler neck from line personnel (or dumb owners) being careless with fuel nozzles. Don't let the nozzle and hose hang from the filler neck. Very bad over time.

I've got tanks from both sides for a '65. PM me if you're interested
