135 Written???

Anyone heard of the FAA giving a written test instead of an oral during an initial line check? If so, does it follow a standard format and what type of questions can be expected. Is the question bank from the FAA written tests for pilot certificates?

Should they be doing this....NO. Does it happen....YES.

The questions aill be made up by the examiner, they are not from any bank.

Last time it happened to me I got questions ranging from sectional chart questions, to VFR wx minimums, to how does a turbocharger work, to how much fuel. The written test just didn't give me any credit for having a ATP, but then again why should the FAA trust the ratings that they issued?

You guys really need to read Order 8400.10 more. The Administrator may give an knowledge test as part of the 135.293, .297 and/or .299 checkride. This knowledge test may be verbal or written or any combination thereof. The the purposes of this discusion, the Administrator can be a Designated Check Airman or Inspector.

It will vary for Inspector to Inspector. Some are totally verbal. Then others will use a written test. There is no bank of questions. Safe bets for questions are, OpSpecs, GOM, FAR 91, 119, 135, Aircraft systems and limitations.

A couple of questions. Is this an initial, initial route check. In other words, have you ever done a route check before? Next, was your 135.293 and .297 checks done at FSI or Simuflite, etc? If you did your 293 and 297 checkride in the sim, what you are really talking about is the 135.293(a) (1) (4-8) check. Which is a totally different matter.

The reason I am saying that they should not be doing this is not because it is not allowed, but because it shows just how lazy some inspectors have become or that some inspectors are scared that you might show their lack of knowledge by discussing things in a oral. Orals take a path where the inspector can dig for weak areas, all a written does is test rote knowledge. And it looks "cookie cutter". If your going to go down this path type up a list of questions and ask them, instead of just flopping down a piece of paper and stepping outside for a smoke while you torture some poor pilot.

And call me lazy but who really reads Order 8400.1 in there spare time?
