SEATTLE, Dec. 6, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Alaska Airlines will begin daily nonstop service between Salt Lake City and Portland, Ore., Los Angeles, San Diego and San Jose, Calif., starting June 9, and will add a third nonstop flight to its existing service between Salt Lake City and Seattle. To celebrate the new service, Alaska Airlines is offering members of its Mileage Plan double miles on these routes, which count toward status in the airline's MVP, MVP Gold and MVP Gold 75K elite-level programs.

"Salt Lake City has long been a top requested market by our customers and we are pleased to add to our successful Seattle-Salt Lake City flights with additional service from four other West Coast gateways," said Joe Sprague, Alaska Airlines' vice president of marketing. "This new service connects travelers with Alaska's strong network on the West Coast. In addition, our customers will enjoy double miles that apply toward elite status in our award-winning Mileage Plan program."

The threshold for Alaska Airlines' Mileage Plan members to earn elite-level MVP status is only 20,000 miles ? 5,000 fewer miles than most other airline frequent flier programs.

Alaska Airlines first began service between Seattle and Salt Lake City on April 4, 2013.

Oh, this is getting good. Maybe rumors of a possible 717 base out West might come true????

This is getting interesting, though.

What is it with you and your obsession with the 717's? You act like a teenage kid on airliners.net...oh wait....

Bye Bye----Genital "Warts" Lee

He misses not having the opportunity of flying for AT on the 717, he may get his chance at Delta, the only problem is the 717 does not have the reach to get the Paris in one shot and we know he likes his coffee on the Avenue des Champs- ?lys?es for €6

I can't remember who wrote it, but either a chief or VP wrote that block hours are going up a whopping 1% next year to support growth. So, I guess this is it.

What's next? Delta 767 shuttle between SEA and PDX? :D

Maybe throw some 744s on SEA to ANC during the Summer and then have a fare sale? This is getting good.....

Oh no not the dreaded 744 stories again... I am so afraid. DAL and RA are about to get a lesson in CSM. General did you know your own milage plan members prefer our domestic product over yours at a clip of almost 80%. Those are pretty ugly numbers. But don't worry you got CR9 717 and The "galactic 744". I guess I better start looking for a job. Check back early next year tell me what you think of those apples.

Hey, I'm excited about this. Your airline will force DL to make some major changes in the NW that they had you guys doing previously. I think that is fantastic. Well done.

I don't know a single person that prefers to travel on Delta vs Alaska...I'm sure there are some but ... Just saying ... When I fly East of GEG ... I try not 2 ... I hear the people getting off that don't know us say " wow I really like you guys , better than Delta or American or ... Fill in the blank..?..
All my business traveling friends will actually avoid Delta or American if they can stay on Alaska flights even if it adds a few hours to their trip..

Yeah, a $1.3 billion quarter had zero people flying in the planes. All mail. Great stories by the way. Everyone who flies on you says after your landing "I really like you guys, and will never ever fly anyone else again...... And make sure you call your sister, dear.....and take out the garbage too...." Laughable....

This is just a drop in the bucket. I doubt either carrier is losing too much sleep.

No, I think this will create major changes.... All great in my eyes. Maybe DL will actually fly more mainline up and down the West Coast. 100 total new 739ERs coming, 88 total 717s, 30 A321s, 10 more A330s, and maybe slow down the parking of some planes? Yeah, sounds like some spare planes could be available. Those CR9s and E175s could always be replaced I guess. Can't wait to see what happens next, but overall this is what should have happened first, instead of having Barbara Bush flying DL pax around. Good turn of events.

Your two airlines are still codeshare partners. I suspect that this has been coordinated between both managements.

Andy,

Things seem to be changing. We'll see, but this SLC expansion seems out of nowhere. The SEA expansion for DL could be justified for feed for the INTL flights. Since when are extra flights between SLC and SAN and SJC needed? I think this will get interesting.

Alaska has thrived for over 80 years. Delta isn't going affect Alaska and vice versa.

Hmmmmm. Oh-Kay. We'll see what the next steps are if any...
