Spirit Airlines Orders 20 New Airbus A321 Aircraft

MIRAMAR, Fla., June 20, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Spirit Airlines (Nasdaq:SAVE) and Airbus announced today that they have entered into an agreement for the firm order of 20 Airbus A321 aircraft.

These aircraft are in addition to the 96 aircraft not yet delivered under Spirit's existing order and will be scheduled for delivery between 2015 and 2017.

In addition, Spirit has opted to convert 10 of its existing A320 aircraft orders to A321 aircraft that will be scheduled for delivery in 2017 and 2018. These 10 A321s as well as the additional 20 will be current engine option (ceo) models and will be outfitted with fuel-saving Sharklets.

"We are pleased to expand our partnership with Airbus and excited about the growth opportunities and additional cities we will be able to liberate from high fares with the addition of these aircraft," said Ben Baldanza, Chief Executive Officer of Spirit Airlines.

"Spirit's priority has always been to save its passengers money, while transporting them as comfortably as possible," said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. "That is exactly what the A320 Family allows the airline to achieve. These are eco-efficient machines with wonderful comfort characteristics."

The new aircraft will support Spirit's targeted growth markets in the United States, Caribbean and Latin America.

Spirit's all-Airbus fleet operates approximately 250 daily flights to over 50 destinations in the U.S., Latin America and Caribbean. Visit Spirit at www.spirit.com.

Well they make money and people show up, so you gotta give props to Spirit. Most people are cheap and no matter how bad an airline or how sparse the service (I've walked through the SAN terminal when a Spirit Cabo flight cancelled = holy crap), people will still click on the cheapest fare online and buy the ticket with a smile.

If you think about it tho there's not much difference after the doors close on a legacy flight and spirit other than you might have 2 inches more leg room. And a free coke and attitude from the dinosaurs in the cabin.

For some of us the roughly 3" less makes it essentially unflyable. I suppose if you're 5'4" it makes no difference. (Look at Seatguru for seat pitch info. A Spirit A320 features 28" seat pitch, every other major carrier has at least 31".) Next time you fly in coach, take a look at where your knees are. Now imagine the seat 3" closer.

I'm about the same height as this guy:

But not as tall as this guy:

I'm 6'3" and fit just fine...Sure a few extra inches would be fine with me but the pre-reclined seats on the 320 are actually great to sit behind. No chance of the seat being reclined into my laptop after I get cozy.

I'm 6'1" and disagree. There's no way you can put your knees straight without bumping the seat. You have to rub knees with your neighbor. I do agree with the pre-reclines though. On United 320s it seems just as cramped but you have to deal with someone's noggin in your face too.

Well, buy your neighbor a can of wine and things should work out fine... Don't be such an introvert!:D

I'm 6'2" and hung like a donkey in a Tijuana night club and those seats are tight Yikes.

Fantabulous? Your FO pay is lower in most years than JetBlue's E190 FO rates.... Much lower than our A320 FO rates.

And we ain't exactly the highest paid...

Funny I had a jetblue FO jumpseat talking the house of ******************** about jetblue and the new hire coming along. I had a few Spirit gal/guys jumpseat very happy with what they got. Smartass thinks he's in heaven at jetblue. Even the jetblue senior dogs bash on smartass.

What?
All I am saying is right now it's fun to bash Blue but god help you
shoud you say anything bad about Spirit.
Yes I know
Fast upgrade
CBA
New planes coming every month and with sharklets :)
Better healthcare
Soft money
Min 4 days off
Bigger market cap vs blue
Next contract will be great
People only care about price so you can treat them bad and they will still fly you
And by August you will have higher captain rates vs Blue.
But, the FO rates are still less vs blue, I guess we still have that.
jetBlue is a slave camp please help me escape:(
