The curvature of the earth would affect a calculation such as this. Have you ever checked to see if you'll top clouds off in the distance through your HUD, but they appear to rise as you get closer? The appearance of the clouds rising isn't only from the clouds building.

I enjoy using the Radiation Exposure App when I'm bored. It tells you how much longer until you will get Stage 3 skin cancer

Idiots? Adding the same 30 mile fix is a procedure that is recommended by the OM, and greatly helps one to fly the airplane more precisely and efficiently in the descent. If you feel more comfortable using your brain great. I don't get paid any extra for it so I'm going to you all the avionics resources available to me.

Earth curves 8" per mile.
I use the 30 fix whenever cleared direct to destination with no STAR or other altitude, it's much more accurate for a nice 3.8 deg flight idle and good reminder when the snowflake drops.

So you don't like to use all resources available to you? Yeah, it's easy math...until you're at the end of a red eye and all you want to do is go to sleep. Then, it sure is nice to have programmed in that reminder.
