So evidently SWA aircraft don't have brakes on the FO side? Regardless of who dropped the ball, they were about to cross the runway when the first officer saw the small jet about to cross and “ yelled for the captain, who was at the controls, to stop,”. Whether it's SWA, AA, Transtates, or anyone else, if the FO sees himself about to get t-boned on the ground, I would hope he just hits the damn brakes and makes his case to the Captain later. That's pretty much what they pay them for. Hooray for not getting in an avoidable crash on the ground....

You are correct. No brakes on the FO side of SWA's airplanes. Only half the rudder and aileron travel as well. Just so the FO's don't screw it up.

Don't forget the "throw-over" yoke that is an option on the "MAX" we just ordered!

From my reading it appears that it was a controller error.

They could've handled it better. Making the comment to have the controller admit he just made a mistake is a sure fire way to guarantee that the next SWA crew that makes a mistake will be hung out to dry. A little good will sometimes goes a long way.

If the crew doesn't have a victim complex then they apparently did an outstanding job.

The real issue is that the SW FO (who was operating the radios) sounded like an AAmerican pilot. The controller based the timing on the Taxi speed of an AA jet instead of a SW jet.

Its an important question similar to "What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?" "African or European?" "You have to know these things when you are a controller, ya know."

Apparently the FO correctly assessed he had time to warn the Captain. That's the typical order of escalation - communicate, then take control of the aircraft if communication ineffective.

Almost 100 yards laterally on the ground. Doesn't sound that close, sure its close enough to get your pucker up for a moment, but it sure wasn't I could see the color of his eyes kind of stuff".

Either way, it was good the FO saw it and reacted.

If he had to, quote "yell", he should have just hit the brakes. If he had time to say, "Hey skipper, they failed to tell us to hold short of the runway that has a little jet hurtling down it. You probably out to stop to keep us from getting t-boned", then this was hardly an near catastrophe.

But hey, that's just me...I wasn't there.
