Atlanta-based Delta said its first-quarter net loss was $318 million, or 38 cents a share, beating the average analyst forecast of a loss of 50 cents a share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Revenue rose 13 percent to $7.75 billion.
The company projected "double-digit growth" in passenger revenue per available seat mile in the current quarter.
US Airways posted a loss, excluding special items, of $110 million, or 68 cents per share. The loss was wider than a year earlier but not as bad as analysts' average forecast of 72 cents a share.
Revenue was $3 billion, up 11.7 percent. Operating expenses were also $3 billion, up 12.8 percent, due primarily to a $272 million jump in fuel costs.

Tanker clown comes out of the closet. After years of flying with all male crews in the military, Tanker clown finally shows his true colors. Looks like pink and blue are his faves of the day. Lucky for him, don't ask don't tell has saved his job. How he gets away with wearing a skirt all day nobody knows. Tanker was quoted earlier in the day, "I miss Mash, Klinger was my hero and I love to dress like him." Genital Lee was also heard saying, "I've got a soft spot for Tanker Clown. He looks a little like my son, and he dresses a lot like my wife." Too bad for Spanker Clown, his ranting about Song has cost him his big shot at SWA. According to sources deep inside SWA headquarters, Spanker Clown is on the do-not-hire list. These un-named sources were heard discussing this at the Starbucks/lunchroom overlooking LUV field. "As colorful and flamboyant as Spanker is, he just doesn't belong in an SWA pilot seat. If he decides to apply as a flight attendant we may just offer him an interview. He can't wear those aweful glasses though."

JP Morgan analyst Jamie Baker thinks there's more room for fares to rise. He noted that industry revenue rose more than 30 percent in March vs. February, even with the dropoff in Japan travel.
"March data once again offers succinct evidence that pricing and demand trends have yet to reach any sort of 'demand destroying' inflection point," Baker wrote on Thursday.

WHAT'S EXPECTED: Analysts surveyed by FactSet are expecting Delta to report a loss of 50 cents per share on revenue of $7.61 billion.

LAST YEAR'S QUARTER: Delta lost $256 million, or 31 cents per share. Revenue rose 2 percent to $6.85 billion. It went on to earn a full-year 2010 profit of $593 million, and analysts are still predicting a full-year 2011 profit, too.



What happened in actuality? We did lose 38 cents, better than the 50 cents expected. DL stock went up 90 cents today. It was a rough quarter, with Japan problems, ATL ice storms, and higher fuel. It could have been worse. The CFO stated we did generate $800 million in cash and that help pay down more debt. Overall, it wasn't great, but could have been worse.


And about Song, I loved flying for Song. That was probably the most fun I have had at Delta. Nice crews, easy flying, (2 leg days) and warm layovers. (for me anyway) Keep bashing it, everytime you do I have great memories come back to me.

Speaking of pushed into something, what happened to your 737 in MDW today? Hotshots! And last year Delta lost $300 million or close to that in the first quarter, but made $586 million for the year, and paid down $2 billion in debt. I think there is time left for profits and profit sharing. You will be doing some sharing here soon also, seniority sharing.

Probably, but back then there were no talks of any profits. This airline seems much better already.

The Japan earthquake etc hit us hard, and AA doesn't have nearly the presence there. Our CEO stated yields and revenue is improving there compared to a couple months ago. That will help.

Delta Rises 10% on Strong Revenue Forecast

Delta Airlines posted a narrower than expected loss for the first quarter and said its June-quarter revenue should rise by double digits, sending shares up 10% in afternoon trading. The rest of the airline sector hitched a ride on Delta’s success. U.S. Airways, which also beat estimates, was up 5.3% in midday trading.

Delta posted a 38-cent loss, better than expectations for a 50-cent loss. Revenue came in at $7.75 billion, above estimates of $7.61 billion. Delta reduced its expected capacity for the second half of 2011, targeting reductions in markets where revenue has not kept pace with rising fuel costs. Delta now expects system capacity for the post-Labor Day period to be down approximately 3% year over year.

The company said it has hedged 49% of its fuel for the June quarter, up from 41% this quarter.

“Based on the strength we are seeing in the revenue environment, we currently expect double-digit unit revenue growth for the June quarter,” said Ed Bastian, Delta’s president. ”We believe our aggressive fare actions, combined with a four point capacity reduction for the back half of the year, will allow us to recover the higher costs of fuel in our ticket prices.”
