I flew with a guy who, while pointing to a fuel lever, asked me if I ever had the urge to shut it off. I said no, so he then pointed at the other one and asked "well what about that one?". Again, I told him no. He got a relieved look on his face and said "Good, I have use the Lav!"

So, I was wondering who else is having these urges?

As long as a pilot loses their FAA medical for simply seeking psychological help, pilots will not seek it.

As long as psychological disabilities are not covered under LTD plans, pilots will hide them.

It is simply the marketplace at work.

The reality is probably 1/4 of all pilots are flying around with some sort of mental/ depression issue (just based on a sampling of the population). But with no way to get help there likewise isn't any way to address the problem.

The US has the highest rates of depression in the world. Far higher than 3rd world countries, according to the W.H.O. I find it hard to believe that pilots are somehow immune from that web.
