Allegiant Travel Company to Purchase Six Boeing 757 Aircraft

Company Plans to Say 'Aloha' to Hawaii

LAS VEGAS, March 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Allegiant Travel Company ( today announced it has signed a forward purchase agreement to acquire six Boeing 757-200 aircraft. The introduction of the 757 aircraft will enable Allegiant to expand its leisure travel strategy into Hawaii with flights to be operated by Allegiant Air, LLC, its airline subsidiary.

Allegiant plans to take delivery of these aircraft and place them in service with Allegiant Air on the following schedule:

  • Two aircraft delivered within the next two months to be placed into service in the fourth quarter of 2010
  • One aircraft delivered in November 2010 and another in January 2011 to be placed into service in the first half of 2011
  • Two aircraft delivered in the fourth quarter of 2011 with planned in-service dates in the first half of 2012
The six 757 aircraft are sister-ships and have been in service with a single European operator since original delivery from Boeing. The aircraft come equipped for extended twin-engine operations (ETOPS), as required for long overwater flights.

Allegiant expects to spend between $75 to 90 million through 2012 acquiring and preparing this fleet for service. While Allegiant is able to acquire and prepare the aircraft for cash, it believes it will finance some portion of the purchase.

Allegiant is acquiring this fleet with the express purpose of serving Hawaii, a major leisure destination that it cannot serve with its existing MD-80 fleet. Allegiant Air expects to launch service to Hawaii once appropriate regulatory requirements have been met.

Allegiant CEO & Chairman Maurice J. Gallagher Jr. commented, "Hawaii is the most prominent U.S. leisure destination currently un-served by Allegiant and our small city customers have been requesting this service. We are very optimistic about our ability to exploit the large third party ancillary revenue opportunity we believe exists in Hawaii. We expect the sale of hotels, rental cars, and many attraction and activities popular with Hawaii visitors will provide a very meaningful contribution to the success of the service."

"The 757 is a new aircraft type for Allegiant but we otherwise see this program as consistent with our existing business model," Allegiant President and CFO, Andrew C. Levy, stated. "This transaction will enable Allegiant to extend to Hawaii its strategy of serving large leisure destinations from smaller cities with no existing nonstop service."

Allegiant Air currently operates 46 MD-80 aircraft and the 757 program will not affect its MD-80 growth plans. Allegiant expects to have 54 aircraft in service by the end of 2010 – 52 MD-80 aircraft and two 757 aircraft.




Wow, that should be interesting. Omni flies 757s from LAS to HNL, and it seems there will be a larger push for the islands. I wonder if they will fly from out of the way airports to Hawaii, just like they do with their MD80s to out of the way cities from LAS, LAX, IWA, SFB, MCO, PIE, FLL, etc? Will they start twice weekly service from HNL to Redmond/Bend or Belligham? (or other smaller communities) Interesting....I wonder what the pay rates will be on those planes? Hopefully the rates will be higher than the MD80, and the perdiem increases too.

No big surprise given the 757 talk a few months back. Wonder where they will be based? LAS? LAX? Clearly they will be based out West if they will be used for Hawaii. They mentioned small town service to Hawaii - perhaps service from BLI or IWA to avoid direct competition with the majors...

I'll be curious to see how the wages look... And whether they provide crew layovers in sunny Hawaii or just use 3 pilots for the out-and-back flying...
 
They big question is are Allegiant crews going to be flying them?
 
There is going to be a huge increase in capacity to Hawaii this Christmas....
 
I bet they won't be flying to Hawaii this year.

And don't fly it more then 75 hours per month per pilot and under not crappier contract then ours!

It would be highly unusual for the FAA to grant 180 ETOPS for a new operator of a type right out of the box. Actually, unprecedented. HA bought brand new 767's so that they could get the approval "out of the box." Allegiant will likely have to operate them domestically for a period until they have the operational experience.

If they can find some former ATA people to help bring it online and get up to speed, they may have a shot by next winter.

Sun Country just went straight to 180 etopps on their 737's. Getting fed approval takes a long, long time.

Good point, for them to quickly get ETOPS approval with no experience in type and no International experience would be a little suspicious.

Sometimes the truth hurts. Huge percentage of airline pilots voted for Mr. Socialist due to his union ties. Now our economy is in the $hitter due to his total lack of attention to our collective economic concerns and his grandiose plans. How will Cap & Trade positively impact our current job situation? Why did the Cap & Trade issue supercede job creation when unemployment was at historic levels? Does that make sense to you?

Please buy a subscription to The Wall Street Journal and at least become familiar with some facts before subjecting the rest of us to your witless rants.
