Out of the big three, DAL, AMR, and UAL, I would say Delta is doing the best. $1.4 billion of the loss was fuel hedging losses for 2009 (from hedge positions taken up in 2008). As they continue to get cost benefits going forward as they trim the fat from the merger with Northwest, they are going to tough competitors. That is why Airtran is diversifying out to MKE, BWI, and Florida nonstop (byepassing ATL) markets.
 
Once the inventory cut-over occurs, the FNWA managers can resume their fiscal alchemy of squeezing pennies until they bleed.
