Does anyone know of any VA approved schools within an hour or so of NYC?

Quick background: I already used about 1/2 my GI Bill for my MBA. I'm not working towards any airline job but want to keep up my civilian ratings and fly now and then on the weekends. I still have about 20k in GI benefits that I'd like to apply. Since you can't just use those to go get checked out and rent a plane, I figured I'd work towards my CFI. I already have my comm/multi/inst.

Does anyone know if this is doabe or has done it. Any suggesstions on schools? Does the GI bill cover the whole nut or does it only pay a fraction, like grad school? Thanks.

Are you a current Military IP? The FAA is about to come out with a change to Part 61 that gives you your CFI/II MEI with military equivalency.

Just need to take the written tests.

It looks like the rule change is about 60 days from implementation at this point.

So hang onto that GI Bill cash and use it on something that can support your CFI habit.

I separated two years ago so that won't work. If I don't spend the GI money on this I will likely take it to the grave. I'm not going back to grad school again so something like a CFI is what's left to blow it on.

I'm looking for something I could do on the weekends. Type rating wouldn't really do me just good. I'd rather get a CFI in something with a G1000 or the Cirrus so when I'm done, I have a bunch of hours in type, a CFI and fat wallet.

Pimp,

Check out the proposed reg. (61.73{h}[1]) here: www.sheppardair.com/06-20_NPRM.pdf

It says:
(h)Evidentiary documents for qualifying for a pilot certificate and rating. The following documents are required in order for a person to be able to apply for a pilot certificate and rating:
(1)An official U.S. Armed Forces record that shows the person is or was a military pilot.

I think the intent is there to capture the former Mil IPs experience for Civilian CFI transfer.

The FAA explanation can be found on page 17/50 in the *.pdf or FAA page 5821.

Still might be worth it to save that GI Bill cash for a clarification in 60 days from your local FSDO.

Best of luck in either case!

CAP10B,

Did you fly with Danielle and Montaine?

Are there any schools out there renting them still?

Check different flight schools. I used my GI bill at a pt 141 state school toward my ratings. Just make sure they are VA approved. It wasn't a problem for me in MI.
